What You’ll Do


As a MENTAL HEALTH SPECIALIST, you will:


• Implement all principles of Trauma Informed Care, including Trustworthiness, Collaboration, Empowerment, Safety and Choice: 


✓ Empower the residents to make healthy choices, by establishing a safe, respectful and supportive environment to identify and break down the barriers impeding on their mental health recovery. 


✓ Encourage the residents to communicate their thoughts and feelings without judgement, and to assist them with developing and utilizing positive and effective coping mechanisms. 


✓ Collaborate with your team and residents to assist with the creation of positive relationships among their peers and to develop a natural support system in the community. 


✓ Ensure residents are provided with the knowledge to make an informed decision and to offer support in the choices






• Implement and document individual goals, from support, behavior and service plans, as written and trained. 


• Daily documentation on progress and potential barriers hindering progress.


• Assist and monitor individuals in areas including but not limited to daily living skills, personal hygiene, safety, mobility and use of community resources.


• Professional contact with family, guardian, vocational placement, medical personnel, case management, peer mentors, and other team members regarding the needs of the residents at the discretion of the Program Specialist. 


• Arrange and transport residents as necessary to recreational activities, medical visits, day programming, educational, vocational programming, employment and family and community visits. 


• Assist residents in developing financial skills and managing personal monies; assist in maintaining a monthly budget. 


• Assist or assure activities of daily living are completed on a daily basis - laundry, weather appropriate clothing, oral hygiene, housekeeping skills, etc. 


• Attendance at staff meetings, as determined by Program Specialist and other mandatory meetings as needed. 


• Utilize positive approaches, verbal praise and soft tone of voice. Use of punishment is prohibited. Yelling and the use of offensive language is prohibited. 


• Maintain privacy and confidentiality by treating resident/employee information in an appropriate and confidential manner (meaning resident/employee information is discussed only as necessary). 


•Any other duties assigned by supervisor. 


MEDICAL 


• Assist residents with scheduling appointments and accompany residents as needed to assigned medical, dental, psychiatric, and special therapies, including Emergency Room visits; relay all pertinent information to team members, or on-call as needed. 


• Oversee dispensing and recording of medications. Note changes in medications and any adverse reactions. Make arrangements to obtain refills in a timely manner. Properly dispose of discontinued medications. 


• Notify on-call of any psychiatric medication refusals in a timely manner. 


• Recognition, documentation, and appropriate management of minor illnesses. 


• Competency in basic first aid and emergency procedures. 


NUTRITIONAL 


• Assist residents in preparing weekly menus and developing a shopping list based on those menus during a weekly meal planning group. • Assist residents while grocery shopping; provide learning opportunities during shopping trips, including couponing and comparison shopping. 


• Assist residents in cooking nutritionally balanced meals daily, including breakfast, lunch and dinner. 


• Encourage residents to follow any guidelines for dietary restrictions as prescribed by a physician. 


• Assist residents with preparing family style dinners to give opportunity to role model appropriate table manners, conversation, etc. 


RECREATIONAL 


• Accompany residents to recreational activities as needed, and assure necessary transportation is coordinated as needed. 


• Arrange, supervise, and participate in informal recreational efforts, both in the community and at the site. Activities should include involvement of the residents within social situations, and if possible. 


• Activities should be discussed with the residents, to assure their interest, and they should be encouraged to participate in the community activities on a daily basis. 


• Documentation of outings on Recreational Activity Record and in the communication log. 


• Encourage daily community integration, by promoting resident involvement in activities being held in their immediate and surrounding communities. 


DOCUMENTATION 


• Documentation is to be done each shift, recording all pertinent and objective information. Entries should be in sequential order and reflect the activities of the shift. Overnight shift should include half hour (or more frequently if assigned) checks. 


• Read, complete, and initial all entries into staff communication log, activity records, and other logs as appropriate, including. electronic documentation. 


• Completion of written reports on routine medical appointments. 


• Completion of incident/unusual incident reports of incidents that occur in and out of the facility to the Program Specialist, or on[1]call, determined by the time of the incident. 


• Expected to provide ongoing input on the progress of residents present and future goals. 


• Completion of other forms as needed, per the direction of the Program Specialist. 


SITE UPKEEP 


• Conduct and record fire drills on at least a monthly basis, awareness of state regulations and agency fire safety procedures, check and document fire systems on a weekly basis. 


• Ensure proper vehicle maintenance, including cleanliness, and documenting the mileage in the logs, as well as keeping proper. record of the gas receipts. 


• Encourage and assist residents in household upkeep. This includes items of safety and cleanliness inside and outside of the home, which should involve resident learning; assure cleanliness regardless of the residents' current ability; assure that the home is neat and clean at the end of the shift. 


✓ Kitchen cleanup including wiping/disinfecting counters, dishes, sweeping and mopping kitchen floors, and garbage removal. Living room cleanup including dusting furniture, vacuuming, and wiping baseboards and walls. Bathroom cleanup including wiping/disinfecting of sink, mirror and toilet; assuring the tub/showers are cleaned and disinfected after each use. 


✓ Assist residents with the cleaning of their bedrooms daily/weekly. This includes vacuuming, dusting furniture, cleaning mirrors, straightening closets and drawers, and wiping down corners and baseboards. 


✓ Assist residents with the completion of their laundry on their assigned day, or as needed. 


✓ Outside maintenance of the site, including picking up litter, pulling weeds, yard beautification, sweeping driveway and walkway, emptying cigarette receptacles and minimal snow removal.

Qualifications


Required:



  • Must be at least 18 years of age

  • Valid Driver’s License 

  • Some previous experience working directly with people with MH diagnosis and disabilities.

  • Excellent communication skills, documentation accuracy, and organizational skills. 

  • Proficiency in English communication, both verbal and written, with proper use of grammar and vocabulary, is required.


The candidate must submit to a Criminal Record History Clearance, & FBI Clearance as well as possess a valid PA Driver's License. The candidate must submit to a Physical & Drug Screening & possess the ability to attend and successfully complete all sponsored training.
