Hourly Rate: $25.00-$30.00 depending on experience

Support for Families of Children with Disabilities is a $5 million nonprofit serving the San Francisco Bay Area with a team of 40 dedicated staff. About the Role

The Family Resource Specialist (FRS) provides family-centered, peer-based support to caregivers of children with disabilities, complex medical needs, or developmental concerns (including children without a formal diagnosis). The FRS helps families understand their rights, access services, build advocacy skills, and connect to community resources while maintaining accurate documentation and strong collaborative partnerships.

Key Responsibilities

Family Support & Service Navigation

  • Provide families with accurate information about available services, programs, and systems of care.
  • Educate families about relevant laws and processes (e.g., IDEA, Lanterman Act).
  • Assist caregivers in understanding their child’s diagnosis, developmental needs, and service options.
  • Assess family needs and eligibility and coordinate referrals.
  • Provide ongoing follow-up to ensure successful connections to services.
  • Offer peer support using lived experience and culturally responsive engagement.

Collaboration & Outreach

  • Consult with service providers regarding referrals and community resources.
  • Support families during meetings with schools, medical providers, and agencies.
  • Build and maintain partnerships with community agencies.
  • Conduct outreach to neighborhood agencies.
  • Facilitate peer groups, workshops, trainings, and community events.

Administrative & Organizational

  • Collect, enter, and maintain accurate service data in Salesforce.
  • Maintain confidentiality of client information.
  • Assist with translation and proofreading of materials.
  • Participate in staff meetings and professional development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience working with families in community or human services settings.
  • Knowledge of San Francisco service systems.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Experience with documentation and data entry.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and ability to learn new systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • English fluency required; Spanish or Cantonese bilingual skills valued.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with underserved communities.
  • Trauma-informed and equity-centered practice familiarity.
  • Degree in social services, education, or related field.
  • Lived experience as a caregiver or person with a disability.

Work Environment & Schedule

  • Hybrid schedule (approximately 3 days/week in office, subject to change at anytime).
  • Off-site community work required.
  • Occasional evenings and weekends.

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to work at a computer for extended periods and lift up to 40 lbs.
  • Background check, fingerprinting, and TB clearance required.
  • Language proficiency testing for bilingual positions.

Physical Requirements

Ability to sit for extended periods of time while using office equipment. Function in activities of walking, bending, squatting, reaching, and some lifting of supplies and materials.
