I. Overview

The Electrical Journeyman / Lead Solar Installer plays a pivotal role in the installation, service, and commissioning of residential and commercial solar PV systems. This position blends field leadership, technical expertise, and project coordination to ensure that every installation meets company standards for quality, safety, and performance. The Lead Installer serves as the on-site leader for daily installation activities, supports pre-construction review and procurement efforts, and performs electrical service work and troubleshooting for operational systems.

II. Key Responsibilities

Installation Leadership & Execution

  • Lead and perform the electrical installation of solar PV systems, including conduit runs, wire pulls, terminations, equipment mounting, inverter installation, grounding, and system testing.
  • Review and interpret electrical diagrams, one-line drawings, and construction plans to execute installations accurately.
  • Ensure all electrical work complies with the National Electrical Code (NEC), local AHJ requirements, and utility interconnection standards.
  • Direct and support a small crew (laborer, apprentice, or subcontractor) to maintain daily efficiency, quality, and safety.
  • Coordinate daily tasks and communicate installation progress, material needs, and any design conflicts to the project manager.
  • Support commissioning activities, including insulation resistance testing, string voltage verification, and system startup assistance.

Service, Maintenance & Troubleshooting

  • Perform service calls on existing systems, including diagnostics, repairs, inverter swaps, and production monitoring issues.
  • Identify root causes of underperformance, intermittent faults, or communication failures and implement corrective measures.

  • Conduct preventive maintenance, inspections, and testing of electrical components per O&M schedules.

  • Maintain documentation for all service work completed, including photos, test readings, and work orders.
  • Provide feedback to management on recurring field issues, product quality concerns, and design improvement opportunities.

Project Management & Technical Support

  • Assist project management by reviewing electrical plans, one-lines, and equipment layouts before field approval or permit submission.
  • Verify that drawings align with code requirements and field constructability (e.g., conduit routing, wire sizing, disconnect placement).
  • Support procurement by identifying, requesting, and confirming delivery of electrical materials and balance-of-system components.
  • Track and manage electrical inventory, including wire, conduit fittings, breakers, disconnects, and grounding materials.
  • Coordinate with suppliers and warehouse staff to ensure materials are available when needed to avoid project delays.
  • Participate in pre-construction meetings to provide field input on installation sequencing and safety considerations.

Safety & Compliance

  • Enforce company safety policies and OSHA/EHS requirements on all job sites.
  • Ensure use of appropriate PPE, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), fall protection, and electrical hazard procedures.
  • Conduct daily safety briefings and document toolbox talks.
  • Verify all installations are properly labeled, bonded, and meet code inspection standards prior to energization.

Team Coordination & Mentorship

  • Serve as the on-site lead for assigned projects, coordinating work among crew members and subcontractors.
  • Mentor junior installers and apprentices in electrical installation techniques, solar-specific skills, and safe work practices.
  • Communicate effectively with project managers and customers to provide installation updates and ensure satisfaction.
  • Represent the company professionally when interacting with inspectors, utilities, and clients.

Tools, Materials & Logistics

  • Maintain company tools, test equipment, and vehicles in proper working condition.
  • Verify all materials are accounted for and stored securely.
  • Provide input on preferred tools, materials, and equipment to improve efficiency and quality of installations.

III. Qualifications
