Building Inspector
Location: La Puente, CA
Salary: $60 - $65/hr
Hours: 9/80 Schedule M-Thurs 7 AM - 4:30 PM, Fridays 7 AM - 3:30 PM)
Long-term opportunity with potential for an extended tenure with large municipality. Certified as Building Inspector by ICC is highly desired.
The following tasks are essential for this position. Incumbents in this classification may not perform all of these tasks, or may perform similar related tasks not listed here.
- Assures prompt review of systems and plans for proposed building construction or alteration, and timely inspection of all structures being built, to obtain compliance with applicable state, federal, and local laws, codes, and ordinances.
- Reviews and recommend revisions to Municipal Codes to the Building Official to maintain regulations that are up to date and compliant with all requirements.
- Plans, schedules, and controls the utilization of Building and Safety Inspectors' time to reduce office hours and maximize field inspections.
- Provides skilled technical assistance and advice to architects, engineers, contractors, and homeowners on plans, zoning regulations, construction methods, materials, and codes.
- Inspects residential, commercial, and industrial buildings for compliance with structural, energy, accessibility, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical codes, as well as approved plans.
- Identifies and enforces codes, ordinances, and standards for conformance with approved construction plans and specifications.
- Inspects workmanship and materials for conformance and evaluates potentially substandard or dangerous buildings.
- Prepares monthly reports for the Building Official and maintains records supporting such reports.
- Ensures quality of inspection staff through field spot checks, workload review, and ongoing staff training.
- Plans and directs Permit Center activities, coordinating staffing needs with division managers.
- Develop standards and service levels to maintain responsive customer service, allocate staff/resources, and monitor efficiency of service delivery.
- Responds to and resolves citizen complaints, investigates issues, and recommends solutions.
- Selects, trains, motivates, and evaluates staff; provides training; corrects deficiencies; and implements appropriate measures.
- Develop policies and procedures to improve plan checking and inspections, including streamlined permit issuance and plan review aids.
- Performs complex building inspections to assure compliance with codes and regulations.
- Stays informed on new materials and construction methods; maintains current knowledge of codes and standards and applies them accurately.
- Studies best practices in municipal building departments and reports findings to the Building Official.
- Collaborates with inspectors to analyze construction and alteration plans, ensures compliance, identifies corrections, and issues permits as appropriate.
- Leads and participates in inspection work, including assigning duties, training, solving problems, enforcing regulations, and promoting efficiency.
- Maintains thorough working knowledge of fire codes and apply them correctly.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

- Building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and fire codes and ordinances.
- Principles and techniques of building inspection and materials.
- Accepted safety standards and modern construction methods.
- Principles and practices of supervision.
- Stages of construction where violations/defects may occur and corrective measures.
- Common defects and faults in construction.
Requirements:
- ICC certification(s) as noted in contract.
- Valid CA Class C Driver's License as a condition of hire.
