Brief Description of Duties:
HSE Academic Programs, Advising & College and Career Services will provide direct academic instruction, personalized student advising, and comprehensive college and career readiness support at the SUNY Syracuse Educational Opportunity Center (SEOC). This full-time, year-round position is designed to serve adult learners pursuing their High School Equivalency (HSE) credential and related academic or workforce goals.

The technician will teach 2-3 courses per semester in core HSE subject areas, including English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and/or Social Studies. Beyond the classroom, this position integrates academic advising with college access and career exploration services?guiding students from enrollment through goal completion and beyond. This holistic role reflects SEOC's commitment to providing wraparound student support that addresses academic, personal, and professional needs.

This position is modeled on best practices from Educational Opportunity Centers across New York State and aligns with UCAWD guidelines for comprehensive adult education programming.

Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to :
HSE Classroom Instruction

Teach 2-3 courses per semester in core High School Equivalency (HSE) subject areas, which may include:

HSE English Language Arts / Reading and Writing

HSE Mathematics (Foundational through Advanced)

HSE Science

HSE Social Studies

Test Preparation for the TASC, GED, or HiSET examinations
Design and deliver standards-aligned, student-centered lesson plans that address the diverse academic needs and learning styles of adult learners.
Develop course syllabi, learning objectives, pacing guides, and assessments in compliance with UCAWD and SUNY EOC guidelines.
Administer and interpret TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education) and other diagnostic assessments to inform instructional planning and track student progress.
Differentiate instruction to address a wide range of academic levels and learning differences, including students with disabilities or English language learning needs.
Maintain accurate records of student attendance, participation, assessment scores, and progress toward HSE credential milestones.
Provide supplemental instruction, one-on-one tutoring, and study skill support to students who need additional academic reinforcement.
Coordinate with SEOC tutors and ATTAIN Lab resources to extend learning beyond the classroom.

Academic Advising

Carry a caseload of assigned students across HSE programs, providing ongoing individualized academic advising throughout their enrollment.
Conduct intake appointments, goal-setting sessions, and regular check-ins with assigned students to assess progress and address barriers to success.
Develop, monitor, and update Individual Program Plans (IPPs) for each advisee in compliance with UCAWD requirements and SEOC policy.
Implement early alert and proactive intervention strategies for students identified as at-risk of withdrawal or academic difficulty.
Connect students with appropriate wrap-around support services including tutoring, counseling, childcare, transportation assistance, and community resources.
Collaborate with instructors, the career services team, and program directors to provide seamless, coordinated student support.
Maintain thorough and timely documentation of all advising contacts, student plans, and referrals in SEOC's student information and advising systems.
Monitor student cohort data to identify trends and contribute to program improvement planning.
Participate in case conferencing with other advising and support staff to coordinate services for shared students.

College & Career Services Support

Provide direct college access and career planning support to HSE students as part of a comprehensive student development model:
Assist students in exploring postsecondary options including community college, four-year institutions, and vocational/trade programs.
Guide students through the college application process including FAFSA, SUNY application, admissions requirements, and financial aid navigation.
Facilitate career exploration activities including interest inventories, labor market research, and informational interviews.
Support the development of student resumes, cover letters, and professional portfolios.
Coordinate college tours, employer visits, and career panel events for HSE program students.
Connect students to SEOC workforce development programs, internships, and job placement services as appropriate.
Develop and facilitate college and career readiness workshops on topics such as professional communication, financial literacy, goal-setting, and study skills.
Maintain current knowledge of postsecondary programs, scholarship opportunities, and local/regional labor market trends to effectively advise students.
Partner with SUNY institutions, ATTAIN labs, community colleges, and local employers to create articulation pathways and career pipelines for SEOC HSE graduates.
Track and report student college enrollment, workforce placement, and credential attainment data to support program evaluation and grant compliance.

Program Support & Collaboration

Actively participate in SEOC program planning meetings, professional development sessions, and staff training days.
Collaborate with colleagues across Academic Programs, Workforce Development, and Support Services to promote integrated student success pathways.
Support student recruitment and outreach activities including community events, open houses, and orientation sessions.
Assist with the development of promotional materials and program communications related to HSE and college/career services.
Contribute to curriculum review and improvement efforts for HSE and related programs.
Represent SEOC at relevant community, regional, and statewide meetings related to adult education, college access, and career development.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Academic Director or Associate Executive Director.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Strong knowledge of HSE curriculum standards and adult learning principles.
Ability to differentiate instruction for diverse academic levels and learning needs, including English language learners and students with disabilities.
Excellent interpersonal communication, relationship-building, and active listening skills.
Ability to manage a student caseload, maintain organized records, and meet documentation and reporting deadlines.
Knowledge of local, regional, and state community resources relevant to adult learners (housing, childcare, transportation, benefits navigation, etc.).
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, and student information/database systems.
Strong commitment to social justice, equity, and SEOC's mission of serving underrepresented adults.
Ability to work flexible hours, including some evenings, to accommodate adult learner schedules.

Job Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Education, Social Sciences, Liberal Arts, or a closely related field
Minimum 2-3 years of experience in adult education instruction, academic advising, college access, or career development services.
Demonstrated experience teaching adult learners in HSE, GED, literacy, or related academic programs.
Experience administering and interpreting educational assessments such as TABE, GED Ready, or HiSET practice tools.
Experience with academic advising, case management, or student support services in an educational setting.
Familiarity with college admissions processes, financial aid (FAFSA), and postsecondary access programming.
Experience working with underserved, nontraditional, and/or first-generation college-bound adult learners.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in Adult Education, Counseling, Higher Education Administration, or a related field
New York State Teacher Certification in a relevant subject area
Experience working in an Educational Opportunity Center (EOC), TRIO program, Upward Bound, or similar federally funded educational access program.
Bilingual or multilingual skills ? Spanish, Arabic, Somali, Burmese, or other languages reflective of SEOC's student population.
Knowledge of UCAWD (University Centers for Academic & Workforce Development) standards and reporting requirements.
Certification or coursework in academic advising (e.g., NACADA), career counseling, or college access (e.g., College Advising Corps, NACAC).
Experience with FERPA compliance and student data privacy practices.
Familiarity with SUNY system policies, EOP (Educational Opportunity Program), or HEOP (Higher Education Opportunity Program) models.
