The accountant manages daily financial and accounting tasks for SCS, a non-profit organization. Main duties include preparing and maintaining financial statements, compiling reports, and project work as assigned. Must be well-versed in accounting principles, and able to work comfortably with numbers with attention to detail. The goal is to contribute to the overall efficient operation of the department and help the agency be fully aware of its financial condition to enable the right decisions and accomplish long-term success.

Duties and responsibilities

  • On-going support for accounting and business transactions. Working in sub-ledger systems and in Quickbooks, post and process transactions and journal entries to ensure business transactions are properly approved and recorded timely and accurately, in compliance with policy and procedures. Examples include: donations, expenses, timecards, payroll records etc.
  • Manage all payables and receivables, including requests from vendors for W-9s and 1099s.
  • Review, process and ensure all invoices and bills are approved and paid/received on time through bill.com or CDS. Process manual checks and ACH payments.
  • Prepare and manage weekly emergency assistance reports
  • Reconcile grants’ budgets with actual monthly expenditures to determine balance and prepare report to share with program and services.
  • Reconcile accounts and perform Bank Reconciliations
  • Address issues identified and work to resolve the problems related to posting transactions and reconciling Bank accounts.
  • Prepare and submit weekly/monthly accounting and financial reports, including department budget updates
  • Assist senior members in Finance team in the preparation of monthly/yearly closings
  • Assist other team members in annual audit and tax filing
  • Assist with other accounting and finance projects as assigned
  • Document processes and update desk manuals as required
  • Recommend processes efficiency improvements and implement

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in finance/accounting
  • 2-4 years proven experience as a junior accountant &/or finance analyst
  • Prior non-profit work experience is a plus
  • Ability to work independently
  • Excellent organizing abilities – ability to independently plan and organize workload
  • Great attention to detail
  • Good analytical skills
  • Ability to identify problems and resolve them appropriately. Important for account and bank reconciliations and budget variance analysis.
  • Good understanding of accounting and financial reporting principles and practices for non-profit agencies
  • Technology: Excellent knowledge of MS Office and familiarity with relevant accounting and finance software as well as teleconference technologies. Proficient at Excel.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively via phone conversations, written communication via email and formal letters, as well as in meetings.
  • Ability to convey ideas and recommendations, concerns and solutions.
  • Independent thinker, problem solver, analyst
  • Internal community builder and partner with other departments

Physical requirements

  • Often required to sit in a stationary position, and repeated use of wrists, hands, and fingers for typing, writing, and holding objects (pens, pencils, phone, etc.).
  • Environment will be indoors with a normal office environment of amount of noise, with occasional increased noise if in the warehouse.
  • Vision abilities required by this job include distance for safety and close vision for reading, computer, etc.
  • Ability to lift or move 10 lbs. occasionally unassisted

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $28.00 - $31.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
