Paraprofessional
- TITLE:
- Paraprofessional – Behavior
SUMMARY: Assist certified staff in administering intensive behavior intervention programs. Supervise students as necessary both in and out of the classroom. Provide support in monitoring, redirecting and modifying student progress regarding inappropriate behaviors and performance.
REPORTS TO: Building Principal
PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum High School diploma / AA degree preferred
- Meet the Highly Qualified requirements set by Federal and State guidelines:
- Successful completion of a formal State Paraprofessional Assessment Test, or
- Complete as Associate Degree or higher, or
- Complete two years of college with a minimum of 32 credits.
- Ability to perform duties in accordance with general educational ethical requirements of Jerome
- An understanding of trauma informed best practices and or a willingness to be trained in them.
- Aptitude for the work to be performed
- Interest in children and education
- Desire to assist students with emotional disturbance in a learning environment
- Emotional maturity and stability necessary for the specialized work involved
- Ability to communicate effectively through verbal and non-verbal, including written, communications
- Ability to work independently and interdependently in different school locations and with different people
- Ability to build rapport with students, parents and other professionals
- Ability to problem solve a variety of behavioral and social situations
- Effective time management and organizational skills
- Experience working with applicable age students who have behavior challenges

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Support Students: Provide individualized, direct services support to students who have experienced trauma, helping them regulate their emotions, manage stress, and engage in positive behaviors within the school setting.
- Implement Trauma-Informed Strategies: Assist in the implementation of trauma-informed behavior interventions, such as mindfulness activities, sensory regulation techniques, and de-escalation strategies, to support students' emotional well-being.
- Collaborate with Educators: Work closely with teachers and other school staff to reinforce trauma-informed practices in the classroom, including promoting a sense of safety, predictability, and positive relationships for students.
- Foster Positive Relationships: Build trusting and supportive relationships with students, providing a compassionate and empathetic presence to help them feel secure and valued.
- Monitor and Report Progress: Observe and document students' responses to trauma-informed interventions, communicating relevant information to the appropriate school personnel to support ongoing assessment and planning.
- Support Individualized Plans: Assist in the implementation of individualized behavior plans for students who have experienced trauma, ensuring that strategies align with trauma-informed principles and address specific needs.
- Model Self-Regulation: Demonstrate and encourage self-regulation skills, coping strategies, and resilience-building techniques for students, serving as a positive role model for emotional regulation.
- Professional Development: Participate in training and professional development opportunities related to trauma-informed care, behavior management, and supporting students with diverse needs.
- Uphold Confidentiality: Adhere to ethical guidelines and maintain confidentiality when working with students who have experienced trauma, respecting their privacy and dignity at all times.
- Promotes and maintains professional relationships with teachers, families, and other Jerome School District employees
- Completes and submits paperwork in professional, accurate and timely manner, as required · Attends staff teaming and in-service training meetings, as required
- Must stay current with school approved restraint/seclusion training
- Maintains Jerome School District #261 employment standards (see Board Policy Manual for details)
- Maintains receipt of positive feedback on yearly summative evaluation
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently stands, walks and sits. The employee may repeat the same hand, arm or finger motion repeatedly. The employee may occasionally push or lift up to 50 lbs., such as boxes of books and AV/VCR carts. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as ability to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to successfully meet multiple demands and interactions with the public and other staff. The noise level in the work environment is generally moderate to loud. The employee works closely with teachers, often in inclusive classroom settings, and provides one-on-one or small group assistance. The role involves managing crises while maintaining a positive learning environment. Duties are performed indoors and outdoors.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Determined yearly by academic calendar, 7.75 hours per day (does not include unpaid lunch).
