What are the responsibilities and job description for the Field IT Technician position at Suffolk Computer Consultants?
Full-Time | Field-Based IT Support
We are an established Managed Service Provider (MSP) looking for a dependable, motivated Field IT Technician who enjoys hands-on technology work and wants to build a long-term career in the IT industry.
This is not primarily a help-desk or work-from-home position. The majority of your day will be spent onsite at client locations installing equipment, troubleshooting issues, completing projects, and performing low-voltage/network-related work.
What Your Day Will Look Like
You will typically begin each workday at our office to:
- Review your assigned service tickets and projects
- Coordinate with our service desk and field team
- Pick up computers, networking equipment, tools, and other materials
- Prepare for your scheduled client visits
From there, you will travel to client locations to complete your assigned work.
ResponsibilitiesOnsite IT Support
- Install and replace desktop and laptop computers
- Set up monitors, docking stations, keyboards, printers, and other peripherals
- Troubleshoot workstation, printer, connectivity, and general IT issues
- Perform computer swaps and workstation deployments
- Connect and configure equipment on client networks
- Assist users with common onsite technology problems
- Troubleshoot basic network and connectivity issues
- Work with our remote support team when escalation or additional assistance is required
- Document completed work and update service tickets
Low-Voltage & Installation Work
This position requires someone who is comfortable performing hands-on installation work, including:
- Tone, trace, and test network cabling
- Identify and troubleshoot existing cable runs
- Terminate Cat5e/Cat6 network cabling
- Install and terminate keystone jacks and patch panels
- Mount wireless access points and other network equipment
- Mount small equipment, brackets, and related hardware
- Run and dress network cabling when required
- Troubleshoot cabling and physical network connectivity issues
- Keep installations neat, professional, and properly labeled
What We're Looking For
The right person doesn't need to know everything, but should have a solid foundation in IT and be comfortable working with their hands.
You should be able to:
- Troubleshoot common Windows PC issues
- Replace and deploy computers without extensive supervision
- Install and troubleshoot printers and peripherals
- Understand basic networking concepts
- Use a cable toner and network cable tester
- Terminate Ethernet cabling
- Work comfortably with basic hand and power tools
- Mount equipment neatly and professionally
- Follow instructions and established procedures
- Communicate professionally with clients
- Manage multiple assigned tickets throughout the day
- Accurately document your work
Important
We are specifically looking for someone who enjoys field IT work.
Some days may involve deploying new computers and troubleshooting technology. Other days may involve tracing cables, terminating network drops, mounting access points, installing network equipment, or assisting with a larger onsite project.
If you enjoy the combination of IT troubleshooting, networking, installation work, and being out in the field rather than sitting behind a desk all day, this could be an excellent fit.
Requirements
- Previous IT support, field technician, MSP, or similar technical experience preferred
- Low-voltage/network cabling experience strongly preferred
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
- Ability to safely lift and carry computers, networking equipment, and related hardware
- Comfortable traveling to client locations throughout the workday
- Professional appearance and communication skills
- Dependable, organized, and punctual
- Willingness to learn new technologies and procedures
- Genuine interest in continuing to work and grow in the IT industry
About the Position
This is a great opportunity for someone who likes solving problems but also wants a job where they can get out of the office, work with equipment, interact with clients, and see the results of their work firsthand.
We're looking for someone who wants to become an important, long-term member of our technical team—not simply someone looking for their next short-term job.
