Position Description
TITLE: COORDINATOR OF SCHOOL SAFETY AND SECURITY
REPORTS TO: SUPERVISOR OF CHILD WELFARE AND ATTENDANCE
QUALIFICATIONS:
Shall meet state minimum certification requirements for a teacher as specified in the Department of Education, Bulletin 746, and as mandated by the West Baton Rouge School System at the time of appointment to this position.
Primary job qualifications for the Coordinator of School Safety and Security include:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field
- Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership preferred
- Five (5) or more years of experience as a classroom teacher or instructional staff member in an educational setting
- Knowledge of safety and security protocols preferred
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Coordinator of School Safety and Security will implement safety and security protocols to ensure a safe school environment for all West Baton Rouge facilities. The Coordinator will evaluate the effectiveness of school safety and security programs as well as develop plans, procedures, and objectives to facilitate and improve safety and security programs to meet the needs of the West Baton Rouge Parish School System.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Monitor School Behavior/Discipline occurrences at school sites
- Monitor Alternative Centers/Programs at school sites
- Oversee multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) and discipline ladders at school sites
- Provide professional development and ongoing support to deans and assistant principal’s of discipline.
- Serve as district liaison for School Resource Officers (SROs) with the WBR Sheriff’s Office.
- Serve as back-up hearing officer for the Supervisor of Child Welfare and Attendance
- Assist in conducting truancy home visits
- Conducts “early warning” attendance workshops for parents/guardians
- Assist with Transportation Liaison duties
- Build relationships and coordinate plans with emergency responders; police, fire and EMS services, and local business and industrial partners.
- Communicate preparedness plans to parents and the community.
- Develop comprehensive, site-specific campus response plans based on the Incident Command System that identify and address multiple hazards.
- Practice and evaluate plans through drills and exercises.
- Continually review the physical security needs on campus by allowing various assessment teams and safety groups to evaluate internal and external safety.
- Stay apprised of the latest technology on equipment which will increase campus safety.
- Develop effective communication plans to communicate within the schools and to communicate with parents in the event of an emergency.
- Develop effective communication plans to communicate with emergency responders, the community, and industrial partners.
- Conduct campus safety audits and train campus personnel in life safety and security issues.
- Ensure that district/schools are included in all community emergency planning.
- Review and revise emergency response plans to include multiple hazards and address the implementation of teacher actions in the event of an emergency as well as campus administration.
- Track and review required annual/quarterly/monthly safety drills and exercises to prepare schools for emergency situations
- Receive residency complaints and work with contracted law enforcement to determine residency.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or Supervisor of Child Welfare and Attendanc
PHYSICAL INVOLVEMENT:
Medium: Exerts 20-50 pounds of force occasionally, 10-25 pounds frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
12 months
SALARY:
As designated on the WBR Coordinator Salary Schedule
EVALUATION:
This position shall be evaluated in accordance with the West Baton Rouge Parish School System Personnel Accountability Plan.
