SUMMARY

Ajax Building Company, part of the STO Building Group, is seeking an experienced, hands-on Energy Marshal to oversee the safe execution of energization and energy-isolation activities on mission critical data center projects. This role is responsible for administering the site’s energy-control program, managing Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures, auditing field practices, and providing expert guidance from pre-energization through commissioning, project completion, and turnover.

The ideal candidate will bring a strong construction-safety background, technical knowledge of electrical and other hazardous energy systems, and direct experience supporting mission critical or data center construction. The Energy Marshal serves as the project’s subject matter expert on energy isolation and has independent authority to stop work when unsafe conditions or practices are identified.

The Energy Marshal reports to and is directly accountable to the General Superintendent.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Manage energy-control and commissioning activities from pre-energization through project completion and turnover.
  • Develop, administer, and enforce the site-specific Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) program.
  • Manage electrical-room access permits, access controls, and required room attendance.
  • Conduct pre-energization inspections and verify that systems, documentation, and safety controls are complete before energization.
  • Ensure compliance with established safe-work practices during energization, de-energization, testing, and isolation activities.
  • Review and verify commissioning plans, energization plans, quality reports, and supporting documentation.
  • Review, approve, and audit energy-isolation procedures for safety, accuracy, and compliance with project standards.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert for energy isolation, providing technical guidance and support to project teams, trade partners, and other stakeholders.
  • Attend daily and weekly High-Risk Activity (HRA) and Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) meetings, providing procedural support for work involving energy isolation.
  • Interpret one-line diagrams, system drawings, and equipment redundancies to ensure LOTO procedures are properly designed and implemented.
  • Provide guidance regarding the control of multiple energy sources, with particular emphasis on electrical systems.
  • Verify the safe installation and energization of electrical equipment across multiple voltages, including AC and DC systems.
  • Audit field practices against established procedures, written standards, and applicable safety requirements.
  • Partner with project teams to identify risks, resolve issues, and implement continuous-improvement strategies.
  • Clearly communicate technical requirements and energy-related concepts to both technical and nontechnical audiences.
  • Exercise independent stop-work authority whenever unsafe energy-isolation or energization practices are identified.
  • Participate in weekly project safety meetings and other required planning or coordination meetings.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Mission critical data center construction and commissioning experience required.
  • 4 years of direct experience in energy isolation, MEP systems, construction safety, commissioning, or a closely related field.
  • 7 years of commercial construction experience preferred, ideally in an Energy Marshal, Superintendent, MEP, commissioning, or electrical-safety role.
  • Current NFPA 70E training or certification required.
  • Strong knowledge of hazardous-energy control, LOTO procedures, energized electrical work, and electrical-safety practices.
  • Familiarity with multiple energy sources and complex system redundancies, particularly within data center environments.
  • Ability to read and interpret one-line diagrams, electrical drawings, system schematics, and commissioning documentation.
  • Working knowledge of electrical equipment and systems across various voltages, including AC and DC systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to audit site practices against written procedures, safety standards, and project requirements.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Occupational Safety, or a related field preferred; equivalent relevant experience will also be considered.
  • Strong judgment and the confidence to independently stop work when unsafe conditions or practices are identified.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical concepts to engineers, field personnel, trade partners, and nontechnical stakeholders.
  • Ability to collaborate across project teams and drive procedural and process improvements.
  • Ability to lift more than 30 pounds when needed, climb ladders, and access confined or restricted areas to perform inspections and support equipment energization.
