About the Position
StreetSquash is seeking a dedicated and innovative Academic & Youth Development Coordinator with a passion for supporting 7th- 8th grade participants in achieving their academic, athletic, and personal goals. This role integrates academic instruction, individualized tutoring, and youth development practices to support the holistic growth and success of middle school participants. The ideal candidate will bring a deep commitment to academic instruction and youth development in an after-school setting, value personal and professional growth, and demonstrate comfort in supporting students’ social-emotional development. Experience working with diverse populations, particularly students from New York City public and charter schools, is strongly preferred.
This position is full-time, scheduled from 10:30 am–6:30 pm, with occasional Saturday programming and select special events. Summer schedules will differ. The Academic & Youth Development Coordinator reports to the Manager of Academics.
Position Responsibilities
Program Administration
- Assist in organizing cultural outings, service activities, workshops, and select middle school programming.
- Track and analyze enrollment, attendance, and participant outcomes using Salesforce.
- Monitor and analyze trends related to student persistence, success, and graduation outcomes.
- Support and supervise volunteers, tutors, and interns to ensure effective and positive engagement with participants.
- Coordinate with teachers and conduct school visits, as needed, to assess and advocate for students’ academic progress.
- Communicate regularly with caregivers, guidance counselors, and other members of each student’s support system.
Academic Programming
- Provide direct instruction to middle school participants during after-school hours, including leading enrichment activities, facilitating project-based learning, offering individualized coaching, and supporting collaborative group learning while incorporating youth development principles and social-emotional learning strategies.
- Provide tutoring to middle school students in one-on-one and small group settings.
- Support 8th grade students through the high school application process, including essay development and caregiver engagement in partnership with the Manager of Academics.
- Design and facilitate programming during the school year, summer, and school breaks, aligned with curriculum standards and responsive to diverse learning needs.
- Collaborate on program-wide initiatives (e.g., Friday enrichment programming, student leadership committee, family leadership board).
- Support participant arrival, dismissal, and transitions to ensure a safe, smooth, and welcoming environment.
Youth & Family Support
- Manage a cohort of middle school participants, providing academic, social-emotional, and personal support through strong relationship-building.
- Maintain consistent and proactive communication with caregivers and youth support networks.
- Conduct school visits and engage with teachers, counselors, and administrators to advocate for participants and monitor progress.
- Foster family engagement through program activities and community-building opportunities.
Qualifications & Experience
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree and 1-2 years of experience in youth development and/or teaching a diverse group of students from New York City public schools or Charter schools.
- Proven track record project management, planning proactively and anticipating challenges, appropriately identifying and involving stakeholders, using resources wisely, being flexible and adaptable under pressure.
- Familiarity with NYC Dept. of Education and Public school systems (Harlem familiarity a plus).
- Strong knowledge of academic advising, student retention initiatives, and a track record of exceeding job expectations.
- Sensitivity and demonstrated ability to work well with diverse populations; can engage allies in various communities.
Preferred:
- Degrees in the Education field are a plus.
- 1-2 years direct service experiences with middle and preferably high-school-aged students.
- Valid driver's license.
- Comfortable taking public transportation with kids and/or occasionally driving a15 passenger van.
- Prior experience in online academic delivery system or platform based learning (ALEKS, i-Ready, IXL etc.) a plus.
- Bilingual (spanish or french speaker) preferred
- Google Suite, Zoom, and Salesforce experience a plus or demonstrated experience to learn new systems.

- A passion for working with young people, enjoying time spent coaching or tutoring them, and motivating them to set and achieve goals in all aspects of their lives.

Compensation & Benefits
Salary Range: $54,000 - $60,000
StreetSquash offers competitive compensation based on experience. The full benefits package includes:
