Job Overview
Employment Type: Full-time, contractor (SCA non-exempt)
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM CT
Start Date: Upon VA credentialing

You’ll work in the engine room of Central Texas VA’s health information system, coding complex inpatient and outpatient records with precision and purpose. This role is essential to VA revenue integrity, audit performance, and Veteran care outcomes.
Central Texas Veterans Health Care System (CTVHCS), Temple, TX
Position Responsibilities:
- Convert documentation into accurate ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, HCPCS, and E&M codes
- Perform both inpatient facility and outpatient professional coding
- Hit >95% accuracy and timeliness benchmarks per VA performance standards
- Collaborate with QA reviewers and auditors to improve coder performance
- Use VistA/CPRS, CACs, and secure coding tools
- Query clinicians when needed to clarify documentation
- Drive the VA’s ability to bill, report, and track care across its systems
Required Experience:
- 3 years of medical coding experience (VA/federal experience preferred)
- Active coding certification from AHIMA or AAPC (e.g., CPC, CCS, CCS-P, CCA, RHIT, RHIA)
- Deep knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, HCPCS, E&M coding, and CMS/VA rules
- Experience with EMRs (VistA/CPRS ideal) and encoder tools
- Ability to hit tight deadlines without cutting corners
- Obsession with accuracy. Love for clean, auditable code.
Compliance Requirements
- Background check, fingerprinting, onboarding through VA
- Completion of VA 10176 (Privacy & Security) and VA 10203 (HIPAA)
- Maintenance of all required immunizations (MMR, Hep B, Varicella, TB, Flu)
- Active certification CEU upkeep through AHIMA/AAPC
