Summary Description
Performs difficult skilled technical work performing maintenance and repair work on a variety of light to heavy mechanized and specialized equipment; provides lead-work supervision to other mechanic(s), and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Maintenance Superintendent.
Job Duties/Responsibilities

- Sets and manages service intervals and procedures for all Secondary Roads equipment.
- Functions as a skilled mechanic and provides lead-work supervision to other mechanic(s) in major mechanical maintenance and repair; participates in and supervises removal, overhaul, and installation of items such as gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, differentials, drive units, suspension systems and chassis, cooling systems, fuel systems, electrical systems, hydraulic systems and pumps, and brakes.
- Performs general tune-ups using available computerized testing equipment; troubleshoots equipment to diagnose cause of operational problem; inspects, adjusts, and replaces defective and worn-out parts; returns equipment under warranty; provides input to specs for new equipment; requisitions parts, components, and shop supplies for daily projects; maintains an inventory of parts, components, and supplies.
- Operates acetylene and arc welding equipment, as required, to fabricate material.
- Trains and assists other mechanic(s); assigns and checks their work.
- Responds to telephone and/or radio requests for emergency mechanical repair of county equipment in the field; drives appropriate vehicle to the field and makes repairs.
- Maintains necessary records or forms and logs information such as parts used and time spent on repairing equipment.
- Maintains clean work area such as sweep the shop floor, clean and store shop tools, etc.; performs building maintenance as necessary.
Thorough knowledge of gas and diesel engines, automatic transmissions, cooling and electrical systems and general repair of automotive and heavy equipment; thorough knowledge in the operation of heavy equipment and other specialized equipment; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions; thorough knowledge in county and state traffic laws; ability to make repairs and adjustments to automotive equipment, including major overhauls; ability to diagnose and trouble-shoot problems using computerized and electronic test equipment; ability to read blueprints and schematic diagrams; ability to understand and implement oral and written instructions; ability to formulate safe operational policies and procedures; ability to maintain records and activity reports; ability to operation standard tools and equipment of the trades; ability to operate standard office equipment and related hardware and software; ability to train others on the safe and efficient operation of given tools, equipment and software, ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, contractors and the general public.
Qualifications
Associates/Technical degree with coursework in Diesel Technician/Heavy Equipment Technician or related field and considerable experience of 5 or more years of mechanical experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
- Valid Class B Commercial Driver's License
- Class A Commercial Driver's License within one year of hire date

This work frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to extreme cold (nonweather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires exposure to wet, humid conditions (non-weather) and exposure to the risk of electrical shock; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
