What are the responsibilities and job description for the Motion Designer position at Story Co?
Full-time & contract roles available · In-office (hybrid considered)
THE ROLE
We're looking for a Motion Designer to join our in-office team in San Francisco. You'll work across all of Story Co's pillars: docu-style films, client work, YouTube series, and beyond, adding dynamic visuals and energy to projects that already have a high bar for quality.
You'll flex across styles, from clean and polished brand work to more raw, expressive styles depending on the project. If you love learning new skills and get excited by variety, this is the role for you!
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Design and animate motion graphics across a range of formats and styles
- Work from briefs developed by directors and producers, adding your own flare when applicable
- Collaborate closely with editors and VFX teams to integrate motion elements seamlessly into the final cut
- Manage your own files, organization, and delivery pipeline
- Occasionally interface with clients alongside producers and other team members
KEY ATTRIBUTES
- Strong design sensibility across multiple styles (brand, docu, narrative, commercial)
- Highly iterative mindset. We refine until it's right and are looking for people who embrace that process
- Fast turnarounds without sacrificing quality
- Self-motivated and organized with a solid work ethic
- Open to feedback and able to implement notes quickly and effectively
- Willing to push back on ideas that aren’t hitting the mark
- Good communicator who works well in a collaborative team environment
- Eagerness to grow — compositing and VFX skills are a big plus, and we'll invest in developing them further!
HOW WE WORK
We move fast and we work hard. Projects are highly collaborative, and the quality bar is something we're constantly trying to raise.
We're a small team, which means your effort and input actually matter!
OUR TAKE ON AI We believe in real people doing real work. We don't believe in AI replacing human creativity, but we're not ignoring the world around us either. We're open to using AI as a tool in our pipeline where it genuinely helps — storyboarding, certain MGFX/VFX elements, workflow support.
