Dietetic Technician

Position Summary: This position requires the Dietetic Technician to assist the Director of Nutritional Services with the clinical and administrative functions of the Nutritional Services Department. The Dietetic Technician assists in obtaining diet history for use in the development of special patient menus and diet counseling; and assists in counseling diabetic patients and others with special needs about dietary requirements for their illnesses. The Dietetic Technician assists in supervising food preparation of special menus; interviews patients to get their reactions to quality of food service and their responses to their recommended diets and speaks to family members to make them aware of dietary needs of the patient and offer suggestions about following prescribed diets.

Job Duties & Essential Functions:

  • Accurately screens patients deemed to be at nutritional risk.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of therapeutic diets and the ability to use the diet manual as a resource.
  • Oversees the accuracy of therapeutic diets and recipes.
  • Interviews newly admitted patients for beverage and cereal preferences and for allergies/tolerances.
  • Performs meal rounds and patient surveys as requested.
  • Maintains the patient cardex.
  • Tallies production and nourishment sheets accurately.
  • Accurately enters data in into the computer system.
  • Answers phones and relays messages to designated persons.
  • Accurately records meal count.
  • Monitors quality of menu items and accuracy of service on the tray line and records food temperatures, menu substitutions, overages and shortages.
  • Monitors employees to assure adherence of sanitation and infection control policies.
  • Monitors the receiving and storage of foods.
  • Observes use of small and large equipment to insure adherence to proper procedure.
  • Purchases food and non-food supplies as needed and maintains proper inventory levels.
  • Performs on-the-job training of new employees.
  • Effectively schedules employees and performs payroll, as necessary.
  • Answers phones and relays messages to designated persons.
  • Accurately records meal count and enters data into the computer.
  • Purchases food and non-food supplies as needed and maintains inventory levels.
  • Accurately records costs of supplies and non-patient meal count and enters into the computer.
  • Distributes menus, assistant patients needed to assure that food items are selected by them.
  • Monitors quality of menu items and accuracy of service on tray line and records food temperatures, menu substitutions, overages and shortages.
  • Cooperates with all personnel in the proper conduct of the department.
  • Maintains ethical relationships.
  • Adheres to hospital and departmental rules and regulations.
  • Participate in in-service programs.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned by management.
  • Direct reports include Dietary Aides and Cooks.
  • Assists Director of Nutritional Services in conducting interviews, performance evaluations, counseling and ongoing coaching of line staff.

Required Experience & Qualifications:

  • 450 hours of supervised clinical experiences in Dietetic Technician Program.

Preferred Experience & Qualifications:

  • Associate Degree in Food and Nutrition preferred.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate with patients, office staff and medical providers. The employee must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.

  • Good vision and hearing.
  • Ability to use short step ladder.
  • Ability to lift thirty (30) pounds from the ground to waist and twenty (20) pounds overhead.
  • Sufficient mobility and dexterity of both arms to safely operate equipment, utensils and retrieve and retrieve stock.
  • Ability to work in hot and cold environments.

Anticipated Pay Range:
The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established based on relevant experience. The above salary range (or hiring range) represents SBEILH’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Prior to start date, the selected candidate must meet the following requirements:
  • Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Eastern Long Island’s Employee Health Services *
  • Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
  • Successfully complete a 4 panel drug screen*
  • Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre-employment screenings.
  • Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).

Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer.

  • The Human Resources department will be responsible for any fee incurred for examination.
