What are the responsibilities and job description for the CNC Hard‑Turning Lathe Programmer/Operator (Mazak & DMG Mori) position at Stolle Machinery Company LLC?
A day in this role
You begin by loading programs to a Mazak or DMG Mori lathe, verifying tool offsets, and bringing the first hard-turned metal part into tolerance. Throughout the shift, you fine‑tune feeds and speeds, validate dimensions to within 0.0001", and keep detailed notes so the next machinist can pick up right where you left off. Between runs, you grease ways, check coolant, and update setup sheets and tool lists to capture lessons learned.

What you’ll do
- Program, set up, and operate CNC lathes (Mazak and DMG Mori) using Mazatrol and G/M code with a strong grounding in GD&T.
- Leverage experience with Mazatrol T, T32, Smart, Smooth X, or CELOS interfaces to streamline workflow.
- Inspect finished components using precision measurement tools, templates, and fixtures to confirm specification compliance.
- Hold ultra‑tight tolerances down to 0.0001" by adjusting tooling and machine parameters with gauges and hand tools.
- Examine parts for defects (e.g., chipped edges, marred surfaces) and categorize nonconforming items by flaw type.
- Mount, align, and secure tools, attachments, fixtures, and workpieces with precision instruments and hand tools.
- Pause machines as needed to remove parts, change tooling, revise setups, or reposition work based on the machining sequence.
- Transfer programs from servers to CNC controls via network links.
- Complete setups and run moderate to highly complex parts following detailed setup instructions.
- Meet critical engineering specifications and interpret complex engineering drawings and prints.
- Identify and implement process improvements that elevate throughput and quality.
- Create clear, well‑documented setup sheets, tool lists, and related manufacturing documentation.
- Communicate effectively with Manufacturing Management and fellow machinists for seamless shift handoffs and process updates.
- Perform routine preventive maintenance: grease, oil, coolant checks, and filter changes.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 5 years of CNC lathe setup and operation across varied materials.
- Strong math skills and the ability to read/understand CNC programs.
- Clear communicator who works from verbal/written instructions with minimal supervision.
- Commitment to working with EHS personnel to ensure safe practices for yourself and others.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally, stand for extended periods, and climb stairs.
- Consistent use of PPE: eye, hearing, hand, foot protection, and any task‑specific PPE.
- Exposure to oils, coolants, and common shop chemicals.
- English proficiency and a collaborative team mindset.
- GD&T
- CNC Tooling
- CNC Programming
- G‑Code and M‑Code
- Production setups for repeatable runs
