Assistant to the Candidate

Steyer For Governor
San Francisco, CA Full Time
POSTED ON 12/18/2025 CLOSED ON 1/17/2026

What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant to the Candidate position at Steyer For Governor?

Tom Steyer is a Democrat running for Governor of California in 2026 to tackle the single biggest challenge we face as a state: the Californians who built this state and make this state run can’t afford to live in California anymore. Tom Steyer has a long record of standing up to powerful corporations—and winning—and now he’s running for governor to hold the companies driving up prices accountable, make them pay their fair share, and make California affordable again. We are building a statewide movement focused on lowering costs, expanding access to housing, reducing energy bills, and strengthening public education. If you’re driven by economic justice, motivated by big fights that matter, and eager to help build a campaign that puts people—not corporations—at the center of California’s future, join us.

The Assistant to the Candidate will serve as the candidate’s day-to-day aide, ensuring seamless support across all personal, political, and operational needs. This role requires constant situational awareness, logistical precision, and the ability to anticipate needs in fast-moving environments. The Assistant to the Candidate will work in close coordination with senior staff, accompany the candidate to all events and engagements, and act as an on-the-ground extension of the team to keep the candidate prepared, protected, and on schedule. The ideal candidate is highly organized, discreet, proactive, and calm under pressure, with the ability to operate independently, make quick judgments, and maintain exceptional professionalism in all settings.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Schedule and logistics: Managing daily engagements, coordinating on-the-ground travel logistics (transportation, lodging), and ensuring the candidate arrives at events on time
  • Event support: Managing on-the-ground details for events, ensuring seamless logistics, coordinating movements, and preparing all required materials—from talking points to briefing papers—with accuracy and discretion
  • Administrative and communication: Handling confidential communications, acting as a liaison with staff and other parties, and preparing briefing materials
  • Personal assistance: Performing personal errands, providing food or drinks, and ensuring the politician has all necessary items, from cell phones to personal comfort
  • Security and access: Maintaining vigilant awareness of immediate surroundings, managing access and offering calm intervention if needed.

Qualifications, knowledge, and skills:

  • Discretion and trust: The role requires consistently exercising sound judgment, maintaining strict confidentiality, and handling sensitive information with utmost discretion
  • Anticipatory and proactive: Requires the ability to anticipate the principal’s needs in advance and proactively address tasks and issues as they emerge
  • Organizational skills: Exceptional ability to manage complex schedules and multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Political acumen: Prior California campaign and/or policy experience is strongly preferred
  • Experience: Brings experience beyond an entry-level role—ideally several years in a personal aide, political, or comparable support position. The ideal candidate is seasoned enough to engage in thoughtful, intelligent conversation with the candidate while on the road.
