Help Keep Patient Information Secure, Accurate, and Accessible. Stewart Memorial Hospital & Clinics is seeking a detail-oriented and dependable Health Information Management (HIM) Technician to join our Health Information team. In this role, you'll play an important part in supporting patient care by ensuring health records are complete, accurate, secure, and available when needed for treatment, billing, and continuity of care. 

Position Summary Under the supervision of the Director of Health Information Management, the HIM Technician processes medical record requests, analyzes, scans, imports, and indexes patient records, tracks record deficiencies, and supports release of information activities. This role works closely with physicians, clinical departments, patients, and external organizations while maintaining strict confidentiality and HIPAA compliance. 

Responsibilities

• Analyze, scan, import, and index inpatient and outpatient medical records
• Review records for completeness and accuracy, making corrections as needed
• Assign and track physician record deficiencies
• Re-analyze and update records returned by physicians for completion
• Answer department telephone calls and provide exceptional customer service
• Process requests for medical records from patients, providers, and continuing care organizations
• Verify authorization and legal validity of release of information requests
• Prepare, print, fax, mail, or electronically distribute medical records as requested
• Create invoices and track payments for records requests when applicable
• Retrieve records for hospital personnel, third-party payers, and other authorized requestors
• Collaborate with HIM staff, clinical departments, coding, and billing teams to ensure records are complete and available

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred
• Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) credential preferred
• Experience with medical records or release of information processes preferred
• Knowledge of HIPAA Privacy and Security regulations preferred
• Knowledge of medical terminology preferred
• Proficiency with computers, scanners, copiers, fax machines, Microsoft Word, and email
