Stewart Memorial Hospital and Clinic is seeking a knowledgeable, detail-oriented, and motivated professional to join our leadership team as HIM Director. This exempt, full-time position reports to the Chief Financial Officer and is responsible for directing and supervising all Health Information Management (HIM) department functions.
Position Summary
The HIM Director oversees all aspects of the Health Information Management Department, including record completion, professional coding, indexing, abstracting, storage, retrieval, release of information, and compliance with regulatory and confidentiality standards. This role plays a vital part in supporting accurate clinical documentation, billing integrity, and organizational compliance.
Position Responsibilities Include:

Direct and supervise all HIM department functions, including record maintenance, coding, indexing, abstracting, and release of information.

Assist in planning, organizing, coordinating, and directing departmental operations to meet organizational goals and regulatory requirements.

Establish, implement, and update HIM policies, procedures, goals, and objectives.

Review department performance and workflows, implementing improvements to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and compliance.

Ensure compliance with HIPAA, patient confidentiality standards, and all applicable regulations.

Review medical records for completeness, accuracy, and regulatory compliance.

Stay current on coding guidelines, payer-specific requirements, and HIM regulatory changes.
Qualifications

Associate degree in Health Information Technology required or coursework toward AHIMA credential in progress (RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P)

Minimum of two (2) to three (3) years of experience in Health Information Management, Professional coding experience preferred.
Knowledge & Technical Skills:

Comprehensive knowledge of HIM operations, coding systems, medical and surgical terminology, and healthcare documentation standards

Strong understanding of HIPAA, patient confidentiality, and release of information regulations

Technologically savvy with electronic health record system

Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work effectively with medical staff and leadership
