Real Estate Accounting Manager

StevenDouglas is partnering with a well-established, well-capitalized organization to identify a Real Estate Accounting Manager for its South Florida office. The company owns and operates a sizable, multi-state commercial real estate portfolio spanning retail and industrial assets. This is a hands-on leadership role overseeing the close and reporting process for a growing portfolio, with close visibility to senior finance leadership and meaningful influence over how the function operates. It’s a strong fit for a real estate accounting professional who enjoys both the technical work and developing a team.

Responsibilities

• Manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual close for assigned legal entities and properties, including maintaining the close calendar and meeting reporting deadlines.
• Prepare and review recurring and non-recurring journal entries covering property operating expenses, fixed assets and depreciation, prepaids and accruals, and intercompany activity.
• Oversee preparation of property-level and consolidated financial statements, including balance sheet, income statement, cash flow, budget-to-actual comparisons, and supplemental schedules.
• Prepare and review monthly balance sheet reconciliations, including cash, receivables, tenant security deposits, real estate taxes, CAM recoveries, fixed assets, debt, and intercompany accounts, and ensure reconciling items are resolved promptly.
• Maintain fixed asset and depreciation schedules and support acquisition and disposition accounting.
• Support ASC 842 lease accounting analysis.
• Maintain strong internal controls and ensure compliance with company policies and U.S. GAAP.
• Serve as a key point of contact for external audits and internal audit requests.
• Identify opportunities to improve close efficiency, reporting quality, and accounting processes, and assist with system implementations as needed.
• Supervise, mentor, and develop a team of property and senior accountants, including review of their journal entries, reconciliations, and financial statements.
• Partner with property management, asset management, treasury, and executive leadership to deliver accurate, decision-ready financial information.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA preferred.
• 7 years of accounting experience, including at least 2 years in a management or supervisory role.
• Strong commercial real estate accounting background, including property-level reporting and lease accounting.
• Thorough knowledge of U.S. GAAP and financial reporting.
• Experience with commercial lease accounting, CAM reconciliations, and tenant billings.
• Solid understanding of balance sheet and income statement relationships.
• Experience with Yardi or a comparable real estate accounting system preferred.
• Advanced Excel skills.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
