Project Accountant

Sterling Search Partners is helping a growing Birmingham client with its search for a Project Accountant. The Project Accountant is responsible for managing the financial aspects of construction projects from inception through closeout. This role works closely with project managers, operations, payroll, and executive leadership to ensure accurate job costing, billing, reporting, and compliance while supporting the financial success of each project.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain financial records for multiple construction projects.
• Monitor project budgets, costs, and profitability.
• Prepare and process customer billings, including AIA progress billings and time & materials invoices.
• Review subcontractor invoices and process payments.
• Track and reconcile job costs, including labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor expenses.
• Prepare monthly Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules.
• Assist with project forecasting and cost-to-complete estimates.
• Reconcile project-related balance sheet accounts.
• Process and review change orders and ensure proper accounting treatment.
• Work closely with Project Managers to analyze project performance and identify cost overruns.
• Assist with month-end and year-end close procedures.
• Prepare journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial reports.
• Maintain lien waivers, certificates of insurance, and subcontractor compliance documentation.
• Assist with audits, tax reporting, and financial statement preparation.
• Ensure compliance with company policies, GAAP, and contractual requirements.
• Support continuous improvement of accounting processes and internal controls.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
• 5 years of accounting experience, preferably in the construction industry.
• Strong understanding of:
• Job Cost Accounting
• Percentage of Completion (POC) Accounting
• WIP Reporting
