The Sterling Municipal Light Department currently has a position open for a full-time Fiber Service Technician Apprentice.
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under general supervision of the Lead Fiber Technician and working with the Fiber Service Technician / Installer, install, disconnect, and service fiber optic internet service for subscribers.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Perform routine and custom fiber optic installations in residential and commercial settings; install fiber optic cable, customer premise equipment (Optical Network Terminals - ONT’s), and routers; trenches; utilize aerial equipment to install, connect, reconnect, or disconnect services; utilize drills and other hand and power tools in support of fiber installation. Retrieve SMLD owned equipment as requested.
Respond to service calls to diagnose, detect, and repair problems with splitters, fiber optic drop cable, ONT’s and routers. Utilize test equipment, as necessary. Respond to routine customer inquiries and complaints related to fiber, internet and/or wi-fi and refer unresolved matters to supervisor.
Assist subscribers with setting up internet service.
Assist with the installation of underground or aerial feeder cables for new construction projects.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Clean vehicle and perform routine vehicle maintenance.
Ensure that work is performed in compliance with applicable Department procedures and safety regulations.
Attend on-line and in-person formal training sessions as directed.
Perform other duties as assigned.
BASIC KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or GED is required. Must possess a valid Class D driver's license. Work requires experience using hand power tools and safety procedures. Basic knowledge of installing and configuring internet routers and wi-fi networks is required. Should have familiarity with streaming platforms. Must be able to assist subscribers in installing phone-based apps for managing and security.
INDEPENDENT ACTION:
Under general supervision, perform fiber optic internet service installation and service duties in conformance with Department policies and procedures. Decisions involving the replacement or repair of system components, vehicle maintenance problems, and head end problems are referred to supervisor.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work outdoors in all kinds of weather and at all times of the day or night
Must be able to lift, carry, and handle an extension ladder
Must not be afraid of heights (15 to 25 feet above ground)
Work performed near power lines and electricity
Work and travel in inclement weather
SCHEDULE & OVERTIME REQUIREMENTS:
This is a full-time position with a standard schedule of [e.g., Monday through Thursday, 6:30 AM to 4:30 PM]. Candidates must be available to work mandatory overtime, including extended daily shifts and weekend hours, based on seasonal demands and production schedules.
HOURLY RATE RANGE: $18.00 to $24.00 - Based on experience
