Senior Fiber Optic Technician

We're looking for an experienced Fiber Optic Technician who takes pride in producing clean work, accurate test results, and professional customer interactions. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys solving technical problems, working independently, and delivering a finished product they can stand behind.
You'll support the installation, testing, troubleshooting, restoration, and maintenance of fiber optic networks throughout Massachusetts and the greater Boston area. Projects range from enterprise buildings and data centers to utility and telecommunications infrastructure.
This is not an entry-level position. We're looking for someone who understands the importance of accurate testing, organized documentation, and delivering a network that performs as designed.
What You'll Do
- Perform Tier 1 certification testing and Tier 2 OTDR testing on single-mode fiber optic networks.
- Perform Fiber Characterization Testing (FCT) for long-haul and high-performance optical networks.
- Utilize IOLM (Intelligent Optical Link Mapper) to troubleshoot and document fiber events.
- Interpret OTDR traces to identify splices, connectors, bends, reflections, and fiber faults.
- Verify event loss, reflectance, and total link loss meet customer specifications.
- Produce complete, organized customer test packages and closeout documentation.
- Build and maintain project deliverables using manufacturer software and customer reporting requirements.
- Perform single fusion splicing, ribbonizing, and ribbon fusion splicing on all cable counts.
- Install, terminate, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain fiber optic infrastructure.
- Respond to service calls and troubleshoot existing fiber networks.
- Work within legacy fiber networks throughout the Boston metropolitan area.
- Verify fiber routing, labeling, documentation, and as-built records.
- Support network cutovers, maintenance windows, and restoration efforts.
- Communicate professionally with customers, inspectors, engineers, and project managers.
- Represent the company professionally in office buildings, hospitals, universities, high-rise facilities, and data centers.
- Maintain testing equipment, splicing equipment, and calibration records.
- Follow all company safety procedures while maintaining a clean and organized work area.
- 5 years of hands-on fiber optic installation, testing, and splicing experience.
- Strong understanding of Tier 1 and Tier 2 fiber testing methodologies.
- Experience performing Fiber Characterization Testing.
- Working knowledge of IOLM testing practices.
- Ability to interpret OTDR traces and identify network faults.
- Experience with industry-standard OTDRs, OLTS, optical power meters, and fusion splicers.
- Experience creating professional customer deliverables and test reports.
- Thorough understanding of event thresholds, reflectance, insertion loss, and customer acceptance criteria.
- Ability to troubleshoot complex fiber optic systems independently.
- Experience with ribbon fiber preparation and ribbon fusion splicing.
- Experience working with both loose tube and ribbon cable construction.
- Familiarity with legacy telecommunications infrastructure throughout the Boston area.
- Strong computer skills and confidence using testing software, reporting software, and Microsoft Office.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while contributing effectively to a team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- FOA CFOT, CFOS/T, or equivalent fiber certification.
- Experience with EXFO, VIAVI, or AFL testing platforms.
- Experience working in data centers and mission-critical facilities.
- Experience supporting utility, carrier, ISP, or enterprise fiber networks.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
