Title: Optometrist

Job Summary
Under the direction and leadership of the Vision Director/CMO, the Optometrist, or Eye Doctor, is responsible for providing comprehensive vision care to health center patients so they can care for their eyes and access tools to support their eyesight. Their duties include conducting eye inspections, identifying signs of disease or injury and prescribing corrective lenses.
General Duties and Responsibilities
- Direct and provide outpatient care to clinic patients and ensure quality assurance including examination of patient's eyes, sight testing, diagnosis of visual disorders and diseases, determining course of treatment, providing and supervising appropriate treatment for such diseases, including glaucoma, cataract and diabetes.
- Participate in quality assurance, quality improvement and utilization review.
- Examine the eyes of patients of all ages to detect signs of injury, disease, abnormality or vision defects.
- Conduct routine eye exams. Examine eyes and fitting glasses or contact lenses.
- Maintain patient electronic vision records.
- Perform pre and post operation checks.
- Check patients for signs of diseases wand refer them to other specialists when needed.
- Reading retinal scans.
- Prescribe medicines for patients with eye conditions.
- Participate in the development of clinic protocols and procedures to ensure quality eye care.
- Participate in utilization and peer review programs which evaluates the quality of the optometry staff and services being performed at the clinics.
- Proficient with modern eye care techniques and equipment.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain scientific information to patients.
- Other duetis as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Required
- Able to provide vision care in a sensitive manner to persons of all economic levels and cultural backgrounds.
- Able to examine, diagnose, and treat clients of all ages independently.
Credentials and Experience
Required
- Current Kentucky Optometric License
- State of Kentucky Certification for the treatment of ocular disease
- State of Kentucky Certification for the treatment of glaucoma
- A Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) Degree from an accredited optometry school
- Current CPR certification
- DEA license
- Valid Kentucky Driver’s License
Preferred
- Experience working with indigent populations and community-based practices/programs.
- Experience/familiarity with Practice management and electronic medical records system.
Access to Protected Health Information
This position will require the employee to handle Protected Health Information (PHI) for duties related to provider credentialing, complaints and grievances, claims issues, Medical Management issues and risk and compliance issues. Access to the PHI contained in the claims, Medical Management and provider credentialing systems is necessary for this staff member.
Special Requirements
Requires full range of body motion including manual and finger dexterity and eye/hand coordination. Requires sitting, standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours. Requires frequent exposure to communicable diseases, body fluids, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinic environment. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Ability to work with a moderate noise level in the work environment is required.
