The Organization
For over twenty-five years, Step by Step, Inc. has developed sustainable community education, health, leadership, and advocacy programs across a network of economically challenged communities in southern West Virginia extending from the Kentucky border along the 119 Corridor to Charleston. From its early days as a writing group for children in foster care, Step by Step has evolved into a regional grassroots non-profit organization dedicated to supporting children and families through the lifecycle from birth to independent adulthood, guiding individuals and communities to dream, work, and grow together.
The Program
The West Virginia Dreamers Afterschool Program supports children and their families to "dream, learn, and grow" by providing targeted assistance, hands-on learning opportunities, and individualized care during out-of-school hours. Key program components include tutoring, homework help, academic enrichment, recreation, and nutritious meals.
The Position
Under the direction of the Afterschool Program Site Coordinator, Enrichment Leaders provide opportunities for students to develop and strengthen their academic, physical and social skills. General responsibilities include supervising groups of up to 20 program participants, planning and implementing daily hands-on learning activities, ensuring the safety of program participants, and providing positive representation of Step by Step, the host site, and the afterschool program.
Duties and Responsibilities
● Provide daily supervision of students during the afterschool program, including meal times, homework help sessions, enrichment activities, recreation, and transitions
● Provide encouragement and mentoring support to students during homework help sessions
● Plan, facilitate, and implement daily age appropriate enrichment activities within an established framework
● Schedule guest speakers, coordinate community service projects, and organize special events, as appropriate
● Implement effective discipline and classroom management techniques
● Instruct students on the safe and proper use of supplies and equipment
● Interact professionally and appropriately with parents, teachers, school personnel, and other afterschool program staff members
● Participate in site staff meetings, regional staff meetings, and in-service trainings
● Participate in cleaning and maintaining the facilities and equipment
● Comply with all documentation, data collection, and reporting requirements
● Comply with all relevant policies and procedures
● Perform related duties as assigned
Qualifications
● High school diploma or GED
● One year experience working with children/youth in an organized setting
● Passion for working with children/youth
● Models a passion for learning
● Able to work late afternoons and evenings, as well as participate in occasional day-time trainings
● Background/Fingerprint clearance
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $13.00 - $14.00 per hour
