Reporting Relationship

The Structural Engineering Intern reports to the Director of Engineering and works closely with other Structural Engineers and Product Designers.

Job Summary

Steel King, founded in 1970, is a growing manufacturer in the material handling industry. We are seeking a motivated Structural Engineering Intern to support engineering efforts through preparing prepare engineering drawings and bills of materials for sales quotes and proposals, reviewing drafting and detailing work for compliance with Steel King standards, participating in load testing, data analysis, and preparing engineering calculations.

This internship provides practical, hands-on experience for students pursuing a career in structural engineering, civil engineering, or a related field. 

General Duties/Responsibilities

·        Assist the Engineer of Record (EOR) with preparing structural engineering calculations for using spreadsheets and/or computer aided design software in accordance with applicable codes and standards.

·        Assist sales efforts by preparing engineering drawings and bill of materials for quotes / proposals.

·        Review drawings prepared by the drafting/detailing team to ensure that standards are met per SKII guidelines for quoting and manufacturing of component parts and finished goods.

·        Assist with the engineering research and development work by performing load testing, analyzing test data, and preparing technical test reports.

·        Assist with preparing technical documentation (guidelines and procedures) and presentations for training and development of engineers.

·        Participate in factory and / or project site visits to observe progress, conduct inspections and assist with preparing reports.

·        Duties may be changed as necessary at the discretion of the Director of Engineering, Executive Committee, and President.

Education/Experience Required

·        Currently pursuing a degree in Civil engineering, Structural engineering, or a related field.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

·        Technical Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and familiarity with engineering software (e.g., AutoCAD, RISA, STAAD Pro or similar) is preferred.

·        Analytical Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with attention to detail.

·        Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to convey technical information clearly and effectively.

·        Teamwork: Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a team environment and contribute to group projects.

·        Organizational Skills: Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

Hours of Work / Travel

·        Standard hours: Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM.

·        Hours may vary based on business needs.

·        Minimal travel may be required between Steel King facilities.
