Reporting Relationship

The Manufacturing Engineer Intern reports to the Senior Manufacturing Engineer and works closely with cross-functional teams across the organization, including production, maintenance, and engineering staff.

Job Summary

Steel King, founded in 1970, is a growing manufacturer in the material handling industry. We are seeking a motivated Manufacturing Engineer Intern to support engineering and operations teams in optimizing processes, improving equipment performance, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives.

This internship provides practical, hands-on experience for students pursuing a career in manufacturing engineering, industrial design, or a related field. The intern will gain exposure to production operations, troubleshooting equipment, lean manufacturing, and project implementation.

General Duties/Responsibilities

Process & Equipment Support:

• Assist in improving manufacturing processes to enhance product quality, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
• Participate in process improvement events, including Kaizen activities and lean implementation.
• Support equipment layout, design, installation, troubleshooting, and repair.
• Read, analyze, and create technical documents, including safety guidelines and SOPs.
• Perform equipment and product analysis for cost reduction and efficiency improvement.
• Assist with the implementation of capital projects and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Conduct evaluations of system performance and suggest enhancements.
• Troubleshoot robotic systems and mechanical/electrical equipment as needed.

Documentation & Project Support:

• Maintain and update engineering documentation, reports, and manuals.
• Identify and request necessary tools, parts, and materials per standard operating procedures.
• Interpret engineering drawings and specifications in alignment with established standards.
• Track performance metrics and support project reporting.
• Train production team members on new or modified equipment.

Cross-Functional Collaboration:

• Collaborate with team members in maintenance, production, and engineering to resolve equipment or process issues.
• Attend team meetings and contribute to technical discussions and project planning.

Required Skills and Abilities

• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) and familiarity with engineering software.
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and documents.
• Strong organizational and communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Willingness to work in a fast-paced, hands-on manufacturing environment.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and work independently or as part of a team.
• Physical ability to lift up to 75 lbs. and work in environments with exposure to dirt, lubricants, or fumes.
• Commitment to safety, including the proper use of PPE.

Education/Experience Required

• Currently pursuing an Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
• At least 2 years of progress toward degree completion is preferred.
• Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles is strongly desired.
• Metal fabrication experience or exposure is a plus.
• CAD experience is beneficial but not required.

Hours of Work / Travel

• Standard hours: Monday – Thursday, 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM.
• Hours may vary based on business needs.
• Minimal travel may be required between Steel King facilities.

• General hand tools.
