Role Description
This is a full-time, on-site role for a Sr. Project Engineer located in Eagle, ID. Qualified candidates are responsible for assisting the project manager in planning, management, and execution of work for assigned construction projects. The SPE works under the direction of the Project Manager (PM). This is the opportunity to continue training in systems and financials and learning project risk mitigation, negotiation tactics, contract language, and decision-making theory. Increase knowledge and experience in construction means and methods. May be assigned responsibility for one or more projects at a time, working directly with one or more project managers or may be given a small project to be the primary manager to exhibit and test skills. Maximizes project profitability and promote the Steed objectives and goals. Oversee quality and safety standards and meet or exceed owner expectations.
Qualifications and Responsibilities
- Assists in the preparation of estimates for the project as requested.
- Assist the PM in budget preparation and gain an understanding of the process and budget management principles.
- Organizes and conducts pre-award and pre-construction meetings as needed by the project manager. Gain competency in scope preparation that minimizes risk. Learn the pitfalls and how to fill scope gaps in negotiations and scope writing.
- Assists in negotiations, and preparations of project subcontracts. Become competent in complete scope authoring and detail review to minimize risk of missing work features. Manage and report buyout status and isolate uncommitted costs.
- Under the direction of the PM, develops schedule theory and skill in Microsoft Project including increased knowledge of means and methods to expedite the work. Exhibit ability to build a new schedule, update the preliminary schedule, and identify milestones and the critical path. Must become proficient for advancement.
- Learn to evaluate and update the schedule. Communicate effectively with the superintendent to understand the progress of the work with logical sequencing. This is expected to be done regularly, not less than monthly. Must become proficient for advancement.
- Exhibit mastery in maintaining current drawings and redlines, specifications, and other project documents. Develop increased literacy of all project documents. Ability to lead team members in all project documentation.
- Proficiency in submittal log/register creation and review of all scopes and types of submittals and processes. Ability to solve conflicts to the benefit of the project efficiently. Properly document changes resulting from the submittal process.
- Become familiar with the Prime (Owner) Contract, terms and conditions for payment applications, change order procedures and markups, schedule update requirements, notice provisions, etc., and how to implement each.
- Overall development and management of the procurement process. Ability to correspond delivery dates with the schedule and solve site constraint issues with the superintendent. Follow through and verify delivery of all items.
- Increase professional communication skills to effectively maintain and increase relationships with vendors, owners, architects, local and state officials.
- Participates in quality control starting with accurate submittals and documentation through field checks when on site. Effective communication with the superintendent and subcontractors for quality corrections.
- Know safety rules and regulations and perform site inspections when on the project site. See something say something. Lead by example.
- Participate and assist the project manager in risk management plans. Learn what the project’s risks are and options to mitigate them and what the potential impacts to the project are or could be. Effective communication with the associated parties when called upon.
- Become familiar with and implement local law and requirements such as NOI and NOT SWPPP management, noise ordinance, site accessibility, etc.
- Learn how to review and understand job cost information and procedures. Participates in monthly job cost and projection reviews as directed by the project manager. Learn how to perform monthly cost projections and strategies.
- Ability to quantify change order scopes and review owner and subcontractor change orders and learn strategies to resolve disputes and claims.
- Develop skills in Schedule of Value (SOV) creation strategies and the monthly client payment applications. Review subcontractor payment applications with the superintendent and PM for accuracy. Follow all processes and procedures for conflict resolutions and timely approvals under the direction of the PM.
- Accounts Payable for misc. invoice approval under the direction of the PM.
- Ability to professionally and efficiently run project meetings and keep and edit minutes, including but not limited to: OAC’s, subcontractor planning and preparation meetings, subcontractor coordination meetings.
- Participate in preconstruction operational strategy meetings with the PM and superintendent
- Participate in Kickoff and Closeout meetings with ability to contribute in areas as assigned.
- Coordinates all final close out procedures for the project including: owner training, attic stock and key turnover, as-built drawings, O&M’s, and warranties. Assist PM in final change orders and subcontract reconciliations.
- Effectiveness in managing the warranty process including expediting resolution to claims.
Skills
- Extensive experience with construction management software such as ProCore, Bluebeam, MS Project
- Strong knowledge of construction materials and methods and efficiencies in submittal review and organization.
- Solid understanding of blueprint reading, schematics interpretation, and site layout planning.
- Excellent time management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks efficiently under tight deadlines.
- Effective communication skills for collaborating with diverse teams including architects, engineers, clients, subcontractors, and vendors.
- Familiarity with construction site operations including safety protocols and environmental considerations.
