The Special Education Paraprofessional plays a crucial role in supporting students with diverse learning needs in an educational setting. This position involves working closely with teachers and other staff to facilitate the academic and social development of students with disabilities, including those with autism and developmental disabilities. The ideal candidate will be passionate about supporting students, possess strong communication skills, and have experience working with children in various capacities.
Responsibilities
- Assist teachers in implementing individualized education programs (IEPs) for students with special needs.
- Support students in their daily activities, ensuring they are engaged and participating in classroom learning.
- Provide one-on-one or small group instruction to reinforce lessons and concepts taught by the teacher.
- Help manage classroom behavior and implement behavior management strategies as needed.
- Collaborate with educators to develop curriculum materials that meet the unique needs of students.
- Participate in training sessions and professional development opportunities to enhance skills related to special education.
Skills
- Experience or willingness to work with individuals with disabilities, particularly those with autism or developmental disabilities.
- Understanding of childhood development and early childhood education principles.
- Ability to learn classroom management techniques and behavior management strategies.
- Ability to develop and/or follow lesson plans that cater to diverse learning styles and needs.
- Willingness to learn Montessori methods
- Strong communication skills for effective interaction with students, parents, and staff members.
- Previous experience working directly with children in educational or childcare settings is preferred, but not necessary.
