Overview

The Vermont Agency of Transportation (AOT) has an exciting opportunity for a transportation planning professional to be part of a progressive, creative, transportation planning group. AOT encourages innovation, offers excellent work life balance, and promotes opportunities for professional growth.

As a member of the Systems Planning team, you'll help shape the future of transportation in Vermont. You will work collaboratively with a wide range of colleagues and partners to conduct analysis, write many types of documents, evaluate policy options, lead discussions, and prepare planning documents that inform investments, activities, and legislation.

In this role, you will be working on a range of planning and policy initiatives including:

  • Preparing and managing transportation planning projects and special studies; you'll coordinate throughout all divisions of the Agency on plan development pertaining to a broad range of subjects potentially including highway, rail, air, resilience, and freight. The project management involved may be of your own work or of consultants.
  • Relationship building and management; the development of statewide transportation plans and initiatives requires a wholistic view of the transportation system and inclusion of a broad range of stakeholders. You'll engage with a diverse range of Agency staff, members of the public, other state agencies and federal partners. The diversity extends to participation in cross-border planning thanks to Vermont's unique geographic location.
  • Learning and using technical resources; you will add and enhance knowledge of technical tools such as GIS, RITIS and other big transportation data visualization tools among other cutting-edge opportunities. You will help others understand the analysis and use it in your work.
  • Supporting Agency leadership in the development of transportation policy; you'll take part in the development of innovative statewide transportation policy. Duties may include tracking and reporting on evolving draft legislation during the annual winter/spring session of Vermont's General Assembly, researching the potential impacts of policy proposals, and coordinating throughout the Agency to cooperatively evaluate the impact of proposed policies.

At AOT you'll be working in a collaborative, stimulating, social environment. At a relatively small equivalent of a state department of transportation, you'll be involved in all stages of efforts from research, project planning, discussions, analysis, writing, preparing, and presenting engaging reports of traditional and innovative types. Hybrid office/telework options are available and encouraged. Most importantly, you'll be living in beautiful, friendly Vermont, home to world-famous four-season outdoor recreation activities. While Vermont is a destination for world-class recreation and cultural activities, it also has ready access to Montreal, Boston, and New York.
