AOT Technician II - Bridge Inspection

State of Vermont - Department of Transportation...
Barre, VT Full Time
POSTED ON 10/25/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 12/24/2025
Overview
The Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) is seeking a motivated, reliable, and detail-oriented technician to support our Bridge Inspection Team. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and reliability of Vermont's bridges and highway assets.

This is a field-based position with an office in Barre City Place, regardless of your residence or inspection location. You will assist a team leader in the planning and execution of a wide range of bridge and highway asset inspections across Vermont.

Core responsibilities include:
  • Assisting with field inspections of bridges and other highway assets statewide.
  • Supporting the team leader by taking photographs, preparing sketches, completing inspection reports, and ensuring accurate documentation of asset conditions.
  • Maintaining inspection equipment and the assigned team vehicle to ensure readiness and safety.

This position includes on-the-job training where you'll learn specialized inspection techniques under the mentorship of experienced team leaders. As your skills develop, you may also be assigned to independently inspect ancillary highway assets. The work requires a specialized skill set, including experience and technical expertise in highway bridges and inspection practices. Attention to detail, dependability, and adherence to safety protocols are essential.

This is an active, outdoor, and physically demanding role that requires statewide travel and adaptability to varying field conditions. Inspections are conducted in all types of environments and weather, often under challenging conditions, including:
  • Exposure to traffic and weather extremes (heat, cold, rain, snow).
  • Wading in streams and rivers.
  • Working in dark, confined, or elevated spaces.
  • Climbing ladders and traversing uneven, slippery, or rocky terrain.
  • Accessing remote areas and steep slopes.

Candidates must be prepared and willing to work safely and effectively in these environments. The work demands physical endurance, situational awareness, and a strong commitment to teamwork and safety protocols.
Fieldwork is most intensive from April through November, with the remainder of the year typically spent in the office completing inventory management, data entry, report verification, and other technical support tasks.

This is a full-time (40 hours/week) position. Statewide travel and overnight stays may occasionally be required. Schedule adjustments may occur based on project timelines, weather, or emergency inspection needs. Flexibility, reliability, and consistent communication are key expectations for success in this role.
