The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is seeking a hard-working, hands-on individual to join our maintenance team. In this role, you will be part of the front-line crew responsible for the upkeep of Utah’s highways, ensuring our infrastructure remains safe for the traveling public in all conditions.
This position may be filled as a Transportation Technician I or II, depending on qualifications and experience. Most employees start at the Technician I level and advance as they complete training through UDOT’s Transportation Education Program (TEP) .

- Perform general maintenance on state routes, highways, and drainage features to ensure infrastructure longevity.
- Operate heavy machinery—including snowplows, salt spreaders, and blowers—to clear state roadways during winter storms.
- Operate and perform basic maintenance on heavy equipment such as front-end loaders, backhoes, and graders.
- Utilize department software to track assets and document work performed by both UDOT crews and contractors.
- Manage roadside vegetation through various methods, including herbicide application.
- Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks.
Requirements For Success
- A Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire (UDOT provides paid training and testing).
- Ability to report to the Cottonwood Maintenance Station within a 30-minute response time and maintain 24-hour availability for operational needs.
- Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
- Maintain a personal smartphone with a data plan (eligible for a monthly taxable department allowance).
- Commitment to completing required certifications and continued education through the UDOT TEP program.
Preference may be given to candidates who possess:
- A current Class A Commercial Driver’s License.
- Experience in roadway maintenance and snow removal.
- Professional work experience operating heavy equipment (loaders, backhoes, etc.).
- Experience with mechanical maintenance or equipment repair.
- Familiarity with UDOT maintenance or construction standards.
- Demonstrated reliability and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Registration with the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse is required for all commercial driver license and learner permit holders.
- This position is subject to pre-employment drug testing and random drug and alcohol testing after hire.
- This role requires frequent exposure to live traffic, hazardous weather, and physical exertion (standing, crouching, and lifting) for long periods.
