The Utah Department of Transportation is hiring an Environmental Program Coordinator to support UDOT's environmental program at its central office. Primary duties include assisting with state and federal environmental review processes and documents, including Environmental Assessments (EA) and Environmental Impact Statements (EIS) completed under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The environmental program coordinator is also responsible for assisting in the development and distribution of program and subject matter guidance as well as tracking and compiling data related to UDOT's environmental program and developing reports. Additionally, this role supports UDOT's natural and cultural resources programs with subject matter expertise.

Candidates should have a background in NEPA and natural resources (such as biology, ecology, or resource management), or cultural resources (such as archaeology, architectural history, or tribal consultation), or other expertise related to environmental compliance with regard to transportation projects. Candidates should be adept at developing and executing tasks in a fast-paced independent environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and Review Documents: Review documents in support of the EA, EIS, and State Environmental Study processes.
  • Support Program Managers: Assist UDOT Environmental Program Managers during complex EA, EIS, and SES processes.
  • Facilitate Environmental Division Processes : Help to develop and implement new or updated procedures to improve delivery of UDOT’s environmental program.
  • Maintain Guidance: Update environmental program guidance and documentation as needed.
  • Conduct Research: Conduct reviews, research, and surveys to identify potential effects to the natural and human environment.
  • Administer Agreements: Assist in the procurement and/or administration of contracts, grants, loans, or similar agreements.
  • Public Engagement: Participate in conducting public hearings and other public meetings.
  • Ensure Compliance: Maintain an up-to-date understanding of agency policy, state laws, and federal laws.
  • Provide Regional Support: Assist Region personnel with field analyses, authoring documents and review.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree in environmental studies, biology, environmental science, natural or cultural resources, archaeology, environmental planning, or a closely related discipline; alternatively, an equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
  • A minimum of two ( 2 ) years of applied experience preparing, authoring, or reviewing NEPA and similar environmental documents.
  • An applied understanding of relevant federal and state environmental regulations.
  • Experience performing surveys or studies related to natural, cultural, or human environment resources.
  • Strong technical writing, data preparation, and verbal communication skills.
