Job Overview

HFC is seeking to fill the position of Fire and Building Code Inspector 2 (*Fire and Building Code Inspector 1, if candidate is not certified). *Candidates hired as a Fire and Building Code Inspector 1, will undergo 12 continuous months of training and, upon certification and satisfactory performance, will be reclassified as a Fire and Building Code Inspector 2, which includes a pay raise.

Key Responsibilities

  • Inspecting equipment, structures, or materials.
  • Trains to inspect and witnesses the installation and testing of fire protection or fire detection systems, construction components, etc., to verify that such systems and components are installed in accordance with appropriate state/federal laws, codes, regulations, standards, and department rules.
  • Studies, prepares, and obtains a federal certification through the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) within one year of hire
  • Maintains and operates an assigned work vehicle for the performance of job duties.
  • Under close supervision, learns the inspection process for complaint/unusual incident investigations, annual surveys of licensed facilities, and construction inspections .
  • Under close supervision, learns how to access and utilize required department programs, examples of Edison, ACTS, ACO, etc.
  • Under close supervision, learns how to conduct follow up inspections.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state drivers license.
  • Must obtain and maintain a fire inspector certification within one year of hire.
  • Possess capability to attend and complete on- and off-site training courses and any certification required by the department.
  • Performs general physical activities including but limited to, walking on uneven terrain, climbing ladders, and stooping.
  • Under close supervision, learns how to identify features of building construction on architectural/engineering plans.
  • Learns how to establish and maintain good working relationships with internal/external clients.
  • Learns how to interpret codes, regulations, and laws for internal and external clients.
  • Utilizes appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelors degree. Substitution of a specific associates degree in fire-protection engineering technology, fire science, engineering technology, and/or construction technology may be substituted for the required bachelors degree. Substitution of experience for education: Qualifying full-time experience in one or a combination of the following areas may substitute for the required education on a year for year basis to a maximum of four years: (1) fire prevention or suppression, (2) engineering or architecture, (3) reviewing architectural or engineering plans to determine compliance with fire and building safety codes, (4) construction project management, (5) arson investigation of commercial or residential building structures, (6) fire or building inspections or design for buildings under construction, (7) any skilled work in drafting, carpentry, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, inspection, (8) or other related building maintenance or construction trades (e.g., experience equivalent to one year of full- time work in one or a combination of the above listed fields may substitute for one year of the required education).
