- Assist with the management for the secure and orderly operation of the state's 28 institutions housing over 23,000 inmates.
- Assist with the direction/management of a security workforce of more than 2400 staff as it relates to correctional practices.
- Conduct routine inspections of the state's prisons regarding operations, sanitation, safety, etc.
- Respond to requests/concerns from legislators, local officials and citizens.
- Represent the agency as required.
- Coordinate inmate group activity, movement, security, transfers and mass releases.
- Participate in policy development/review/implementation.
- Respond to emergency situations and actively participate/assist with inmate escape and apprehension.
- Confer, personally, by phone, and through correspondence with inmates and families concerning assignments, custody, disciplinaries, etc.
- Responsible for daily office management as it relates to review of all correspondence/responses.
- Directly supervise 9 hearing officers responsible for administering the inmate disciplinary system.
