What are the responsibilities and job description for the Cook 2 position at State of Ohio?
As a Cook, you will work under direction of the Food Service Manager. This position requires thorough knowledge of food preparation, sanitation, storage & operation of food service equipment to prepare, cook & serve food. Other duties include, but are not limited to:
- Provide work direction & training to youth workers & youth apprentice in food preparation, sanitation & storage of food for the Ohio Department of Youth Services (DYS) Cuyahoga Hills Juvenile Correctional Facility (CHJCF);
- Monitor service lines, loading of carts, storage of foods & general cleaning;
- Work all stations on a rotating basis to include cooking, dish washing, wiping down tables, working on the serving line, and sweeping & moping floors
- Operate commercial/standard kitchen equipment to cook food
- Mix salad & make desserts, dressings & breads; prepare hot & cold beverages & special menu foods; slice meat & cheese; make sandwiches; assemble fruit plates & relish trays; clean & cut vegetables & meats before cooking & mixing
- Clean work area, equipment & utensils; ensure safety & sanitation of assigned area;
- Operate cash register; prepare daily paperwork to include but not limited to HAACP forms;
- Supervise youth workers assigned to work area; follow youth general safety& security procedures;
- Set up food-line & portions of food in compliance with established dietary requirements;
- Set up food carts according to daily recipes to be followed in food preparation area.

Qualifications
Formal education in arithmetic that includes addition, subtraction, multiplication & division; 6 mos. trg. or 6 mos. exp. in food preparation, sanitation & storage & use of food service equipment in institutional, school or restaurant setting. Applicant must list examples of experience in food service.

The final candidate selected for this position will be required to undergo a pre-employment drug screening and criminal background check that includes results from BCI & FBI. An individual assessment of an applicant's prior criminal convictions will be made before excluding an applicant from consideration.
DYS is a "qualifying employer" for purposes of the federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness [PSLF] program.
All new candidates hired to the Department of Youth Services must complete a paid, mandatory 6 weeks of training. Week 1 is held at the facility, weeks 2 through 4 are held at DYS Training Academy in Orient, Ohio, Monday through Thursday, 7:00 am - 5:00 pm. (travel, lodging, and meals are provided). Weeks 5 - 6 are on the job training held at the facility.
