What are the responsibilities and job description for the Historic Site Visitor Experience Associate position at State of North Dakota and Careers?
Summary of Work
Job Duration: May 1st through September 30th, 2026. Up to 40 hours per week, hours and duration subject to negotiation.
The Historic Site Visitor Experience Associate will execute their responsibilities with a positive attitude, neat appearance, and enthusiasm. The successful applicant will:
- Actively listen to visitors, answer their questions, warmly welcome and orient them, assist with special events and conduct guided tours.
- Interpret site history accurately while presenting the information in a compelling and accessible way that creates meaningful and memorable visitor experiences.
- Assess and provide for visitors' special needs, such as appropriate services for the elderly, handicapped, and foreign visitors.
- Provide excellent customer service.
- Clean and tidy facilities including work areas, public areas, and bathrooms. Perform other light maintenance tasks which might include watering and weeding outdoor plantings, dusting, and emptying trash receptacles.
- Assist with store operations, including keeping merchandise neatly displayed and dusted, keeping track of inventory, and operating and reconciling a cash register, while following policies and procedures.
- Familiarize visitors with the State Historical Society mission and its other state historic sites.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
- Ability to communicate with groups and individuals of diverse ages, interests, and perspectives, using appropriate language and hands-on skills.
- Ability to learn site history.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends, holidays, and some evenings.
- Ability to accurately complete required forms such as timesheets, till counts, etc.

About Fort Buford State Historic Site and Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence Interpretive Center (MYCIC): Located near the confluence of the Missouri and Yellowstone Rivers, Fort Buford State Historic Site and the Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence Interpretive Center (MYCIC) offer visitors a unique chance to explore history and the surrounding landscape. The MYCIC features a rotunda with two exhibit galleries, a media/community room, and access to scenic trails, while Fort Buford includes three restored original buildings and a reconstructed Barracks.
