The Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf (ENCSD) is a state school serving the 54 eastern most counties that provides a specialized learning environment for deaf and hard of hearing students, kindergarten through 12th grade, following a typical school calendar. The ENCSD offers students an academic setting with standards-based instruction, low classroom ratios, career and vocational skills development, current technology, and an overall accessible environment for learning through American Sign Language. A boarding program is available for enrolled students residing outside of Wilson County. The ENCSD seeks to promote both intentional and experiential learning to provide continued advancement in student academic achievement and social/emotional well-being.

The Eastern NC School for the Deaf is seeking an experienced Receptionist to join our team. Experience working in a school environment is a plus. The perfect candidate will be friendly, highly motivated, energetic and work well with educators, parents and co-workers.

The primary purpose of this position is to provide Administrative Support to the front desk reception area. Responsibilities and duties may include, greeting visitors; Answer, screen and direct incoming phone calls to appropriate department; and accurately record message information as requested by customer.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities / Competencies

The Knowledge, Skills and Abilities listed below, along with the Minimum Education and Experience requirements, are REQUIRED to qualify for this position. We will not review resumes in lieu of Experience and Education listed on the application.

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:

  • Receptionist experience explaining and interpreting information to clients/customers and/or staff.
  • Knowledge of office equipment and/or other relevant technology (software, computer, and switchboard systems) to meet organizational needs.
  • Experience with communicating in verbal and written form.

Management will give preference to applicants who have worked in a secretarial, administrative assistant or receptionist role in an educational environment. Preference will also be given to application who are proficient communicating using American Sign Language.

Helpful but not required: The ability to communicate using American Sign Language. If not already proficient in American Sign Language, the selected candidate will be required to attend American Sign Language classes, free of charge, during work time on the campus of Eastern NC School for the Deaf.

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

Some state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both. High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of related administrative experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Applicants seeking National Guard preference must attach an NGB 23A (RPAS) if they are a current member of the NC National Guard. If an applicant is a former NC National Guard Member who served for at least 6 years and was discharged under honorable conditions, they must attach either a DD256 or NGB 22 along with their State application.

Applicants with degrees not conferred at a United States college or university must attach a degree verification that their degree is equivalent to a similar degree form a US institution.
