Primary Purpose of Position:

Position performs hands on tasks involving the maintenance and repair of buildings, facilities, and grounds, including the maintenance of necessary equipment and tools. The site also includes the 16th century replica ship the “Elizabeth II”. Work includes routine maintenance, painting, trash collection, custodial tasks, mowing and trimming and other repairs as needed.  

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Perform a variety of semiskilled tasks.  
  • Assist with grounds maintenance
  • Assist with custodial tasks
  • Assist with setting up and taking down for events

Position/Physical Requirements:

  • Must be available to work the schedule of Monday - Friday 7:30am - 4:00pm with occasional weekends, holidays, and evenings.
  • Ability to perform work inside and outside in various environmental conditions with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
  • Must have the ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • No relocation assistance will be provided for this position.

Management Prefers:

  • Demonstrated work experience with general maintenance, including routine repairs.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of equipment uses and maintenance.
  • Demonstrate experience with ground maintenance practices, including trash removal.
  • Knowledge of custodial functions.

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma 
OR
a sufficient year-for-year combination of education and experience associated with a variety of mechanical or building trades; 
OR
an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Necessary Special Qualification May require current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations Part 82, Subpart F.

Section/Unit Description:

Roanoke Island Festival Park is a 27-acre site.  First opening in 1983 with the “Elizabeth II”, a 16th century replica sailing vessel, a visitor/ticket sales center, offices, and a 50-seat auditorium.  In 1998 an expansion project was completed, adding an 8,500 sq.ft. Adventure Museum; a 240-seat film/small performance indoor theatre; 3,0000-sq.ft. meeting room; an outdoor performance pavilion with lawn seating for 3,500; a museum store; administrative offices; maintenance facilities; waterside boardwalks; and a public Kayak Launch.

Veteran’s and National Guard Preference

Applicants seeking Veteran’s Preference must attach a DD Form 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, along with the state application.

Applicants seeking National Guard Preference must attach an NGB 23A (RPAS), along with the state application if they are a current member of the NC National Guard in good standing. 

Applicants who are former member of either the NC Army National Guard or the NC Air National Guard, with honorable discharge and six years of creditable service must attach a copy of the DD 256 or NGB 22, along with the state application.
