Description of Work

This position is responsible for performing and overseeing the performance of routine procedures and preventive maintenance in Hematology section, while ensuring quality assurance and quality control are following laboratory standards and the laboratory policy manual. This position will also be required to rotate through all other areas of the laboratory, work alone on non-routine shifts and weekends. These areas include Chemistry, Special Chemistry, Therapeutic drug monitoring/Toxicology, Immunology/Serology, Point of Care testing, EKG, Phlebotomy, Microbiology, Reference and general office duties.

Responsibilities include:
  • Troubleshooting laboratory equipment
  • Interpreting and reporting laboratory results
  • Ensuring daily, weekly, and monthly quality control are within laboratory acceptable limits
  • Providing diagnostic data to clients and physicians at Broughton Hospital and the outreach clients of Western NC
  • Training personnel to comply with regulatory agencies.
  • Possible couriering duties may be included with this job

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Recruitment Range: $58,265.00 - $87,396.00

The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:

  • Experience monitoring laboratory results in a health care setting

  • Experience working in a clinical Hematology section

  • Experience troubleshooting quality control issues

Management Preferences:

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology

  • ASCP Certification

Conditional Requirements: Selected applicants must be able to pass a State Bureau of Investigation Criminal History Check, and complete and pass BLS/CPR training and Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training during orientation.

This Position Is Designated As Mandatory And Must Report Or Stay Over During Adverse Weather Events.

The normal working schedule will be Monday-Friday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm with rotating weekends and holidays, after hours and on call.

About the Facility:

Broughton Hospital is one of the three regional psychiatric hospitals with statutory responsibility for operating as part of the Division of State Operated Healthcare Facilities (DSOHF). With the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, we provide help and support to North Carolinians, and their families, experiencing mental illness. Our hospital serves the western thirty-seven (37) counties of North Carolina, as part of the state's system of care and treatment for persons with mental illness.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, chemistry, or a biological science from an appropriately accredited institution; or Associate degree in medical technology from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in a medical laboratory; or Completion of a Certified Laboratory Assistant course in medical technology or a comparable course and three years of experience in a medical laboratory; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
