DEQ has an open opportunity for an Electronics Technician III.


It is full-time (40 hours per week) with State Benefits.


This position currently qualifies for a hybrid telework option with routine office and remote workdays. The NC Department of Environmental Quality trusts our employees to be self-motivated and successful in hybrid/remote roles. Telework options are subject to change at the discretion of management.


The Electronics Technician III position will maintain and repair complex electronic devices and systems including the design, modification and installation of complex electronic devices which interface with systems. The position maintains specialized and complex electronic devices and systems including but not limited to ambient air samplers, solar charging systems, cellular communication systems, mass flow controllers, flow meters, pressure sensors, vacuum gauges, and temperature sensors. The position may design and modify complex electronic circuitry to perform special, new or unusual functions. The position may consult with device and system manufacturers and staff to ensure the electronic systems and devices are operating according to the project parameters. Maintenance and repair are performed on electronic devices and systems where troubleshooting difficulties are compounded by complex devices and systems which are interconnected and often lack documentation in the form of schematic diagrams, wring diagrams, or repair manuals. Work is evaluated through the operational status of the electronic devices systems, analysis of equipment reliability, documentation of records and data, and effective communication.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine maintenance, calibration and certification of ambient air monitoring sampling equipment, laboratory equipment, support equipment, transfer standards, and primary standards.
  • Communicate effectively with equipment vendors and manufacturers to solve complex electronic equipment and system issues.
  • Ensure the electronic devices and systems are calibrated against a National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)-traceable standard.
  • Ensure field sampling equipment is installed at the ambient air monitoring sites and meets or exceeds the siting criteria established in approved standard operating procedures, quality assurance project plans, EPA guidance documents, and EPA compendium method documents.
  • Document equipment maintenance activities, calibration data, and certification data in written and electronic formats.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Documented experience in the design, diagnosis, maintenance, modification, and/or installation of electronic devices and/or systems for evaluation or compliance.
  • Demonstrated experience communicating information to clients, municipal/local officials, or the public using written and/or oral communication skills.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate's degree in electronics from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressive experience in the repair and maintenance of complex electronic systems including some responsibility for the design of electronic apparatus; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Based on the nature of work performed, may require appropriate licensure by the governing board or commission.
