The duties that the incumbent of the vacancy will be expected to perform. Duties Description Under the supervision of the Natural Resources Operations Manager (Park Manager 1, SG-18), the incumbent will play a primary role in the evaluation, maintenance, and removal of trees throughout the region. This position involves expertly felling, limbing, and bucking trees; identifying and documenting hazardous or diseased trees; assisting in the planning and implementation of tree replacement strategies in coordination with staff. Duties include, but may not be limited to: • Evaluate tree health and risk based on visual inspection and provide recommendations on potential maintenance. • Document locations and conditions of trees scheduled for removal or treatment.• Develop, communicate, and implement a plan for felling and other removal methods for hazardous or dead trees using appropriate tools and equipment.• Build and set up rigging systems, including connecting pulleys, sheaves, and related hardware for controlled tree removals or material handling.• Confers with park managers to identify potentially hazardous trees that will be removed or pruned. Assist park managers in hazardous tree assessments throughout the region.• Safely fell, limb, buck, and remove hazardous trees, whether standing, lodged, or downed, using appropriate tools and equipment.• Perform proper tree care operations including pruning and removals from aerial lifts and the ground.• Ensures and demonstrates work being performed is done to current arboricultural best practices and safety standards.• Collaborate with and assist regional horticultural staff in support of invasive species identification, species selection and replanting efforts, and other tree care and maintenance tasks.• Train and supervise subordinate staff and volunteers with tree felling, pruning, rigging, stump grinding, brush chipping and other related tasks.• Perform skilled and semiskilled work in the repair and maintenance of facilities and equipment such as service and repair of assigned equipment, operation of heavy equipment, assist regional electricians with infrastructure corridor maintenance, and assist other trades related fields as needed.• Perform heavy manual labor, including lifting, bending, climbing, and standing for extended periods (frequent lifting and carrying of 26lbs. to 50lbs. / occasional lifting and carrying of 51lbs. to 100lbs.).• Adhere to all applicable safety regulations and use proper personal protective equipment (PPE).• Operate and maintain various equipment including chainsaws, commercial vehicles, bucket trucks, aerial lifts, dump trucks, chippers, stump grinders, skid steers, and other heavy equipment and hand tools used in tree care and park operations• May interact with park patrons to resolve concerns, answer questions, and give general directions.• Consistently respond to emergencies when called upon on as part of the region’s call-out roster usage procedure.
The minimum qualifications required for this vacancy. Minimum Qualifications Four years of full-time experience under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in skilled trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.*If verifiable, we will accept and prorate appropriate part-time and volunteer experience.

Additional Comments Operating Needs: Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to operate a vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.Must currently possess a demonstratable ability to operate a chainsaw safely, comfortably, and with a high degree of technical proficiency. Must have the ability to operate a chainsaw and must complete OPRHP sawyer training Level 2 or equivalent within the probationary period and maintain it as a term and condition of employment. This training will be provided by OPRHP. Must become aerial lift/bucket truck certified within the probationary period as a term and condition of employment.Must possess a valid ***Class B Commercial Driver's License or obtain one within the probationary period and maintain it as a term and condition of employment.***Under the provision of the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act (1991), this position has been designated Safety Sensitive. The incumbent is required to participate in pre-employment, random and post-accident drug and alcohol testing.
