The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) works to provide a safe and efficient transportation system for the traveling public in New Mexico. The Multimodal Planning and Programs Bureau is part of the Planning Division and is focused on providing multimodal transportation planning services for the Department, as well as managing several federal funding programs, and coordinating with governmental agencies around New Mexico.

As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to receive three (3) days of administrative leave upon your start date. This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government.
Why does the job exist?

The Senior Transportation Planners are part of the Multimodal Planning and Programs Bureau. Duties may include serving as a Planning Liaison to Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) and Regional Transportation Planning Organizations (RTPOs), including coordinating on program administration; managing federally funded programs and projects, such as the Transportation Alternatives Program; assisting the Bureau with the development and implementation of multimodal transportation plans; assisting the State¿s Bicycle, Pedestrian, Equestrian Coordinator with statewide multimodal project development and review, especially as it pertains to bicycle and pedestrian planning; and other duties as assigned.
How does it get done?

The primary responsibilities of this position will include:
  • Internal and external coordination including with the Department District offices on multimodal elements in project development.
  • Working with the Metropolitan and Regional Transportation Planning Organizations on planning, grants management, administration and programming.
  • Tribal/Local Public Agencies (T/LPA) that receive funds/projects managed by the Bureau.
  • Attend meetings (virtual and in-person).
  • Make project recommendations related to active transportation and transportation safety.
  • Work directly with Metropolitan and Regional Transportation Planning Organizations and their member entities on their administration and project development.
  • Manage federal funding programs and grants.
  • Serve as a transportation planning resource for the Department and our planning partners.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's Degree in planning, architecture, business administration, public administration, or political science and one (1) year of experience to include urban transportation or infrastructure planning, real estate, commercial or public land usage, grant management, procurement, working with contracts, right of way appraisal, inter-agency coordination, engineering design, business administration, and/or economics. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling five (5) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions

Primarily office setting with significant use of computer, telephone and virtual meeting platforms. Also requires some travel (overnight and same-day) within New Mexico, using a department vehicle. Some same-day and overnight travel within New Mexico is required. Positions are 100% in-person; no remote work options are available.
