As a Design Unit Architect within the Project Design Unit, you will have the opportunity to build for a stronger tomorrow by applying your diverse background, education, and work experiences to wide variety and range of assignments to produce quality project design documents and aid in the implementation of state asset improvements. This person will use a broad application of architectural knowledge to serve as a technical resource for the project team to accomplish designs within budget, conduct inspections, and establish corrective courses of action utilizing multiple design options to support the mission and vision of FMDC. This position is with the Office of Administration Division of Facilities Management, Design, and Construction (OA-FMDC) Design and Construction Team, supporting the Project Design Unit. OA-FMDC is committed to strengthening the State’s investments while providing a safe and secure environment through innovative design solutions and excellent customer service.

The salary indicated represents a base pay rate. If the individual selected or the position is eligible for a pay differential (e.g., shift, security, or years of service), it will be added to the total compensation in your paycheck. A pay differential does not raise your base pay.

Responsibilities - What you’ll do
  • Prioritize excellent customer service for wide and diverse network of internal and external stakeholders, including but not limited to internal teams, state agencies, state officials, contractors, and the public.
  • Serve as a technical resource to members of a project team. Provide technical guidance to other professionals within the department and key stakeholders.
  • Design and develop a wide variety of architectural design opportunities from start to finish, including roof replacement, interior office renovations, accessibility upgrades, exterior building improvements, historical renovations, and more.
  • Prepare drawings and specifications for all projects, review the work product, resolve conflicts, and provide scheduling control of architectural project assignments including drawing quality (using CAD standards and using relevant codes, products, and standards), specification quality (using CSI format), cost estimate quality (using RSMeans format), and overall review of construction administration phase activities and project delivery requirements.
  • Complete field work verification of existing facility conditions. Translate field data and related design calculations into sketches to be assigned to a CAD Technician, or self-prepare AutoCAD drawings, for use in the bidding and construction of state projects.
  • Create and edit technical specifications in the CSI industry standard format and prepare estimates of construction cost based on published RSMeans cost data.
  • Participate in management of the construction phase of projects by reviewing contractor’s shop drawings, verifying contractor’s compliance with the construction drawings and specifications, and complete the designer certification of contractor pay applications and contractor requests for change orders as needed.
  • Follow all OA-FMDC health and safety protocols in addition to OSHA standards.
Qualifications - All you need for success
  • Ability to communicate, collaborate and lead with integrity in a manner that inspires trust and builds positive rapport with a diverse group of stakeholders and the public.
  • Ability to manage numerous time-sensitive projects independently or as part of a team using procedures, processes, regulations, and practices applicable to the security of state government.
  • Bachelor’s degree in architecture or related field.
  • Registration as a professional architect in the State of Missouri preferred.
  • 3-8 years’ experience in architecture, design and/or related field.
  • Ability to efficiently utilize software resources such as AutoCAD, RSMeans, Adobe Acrobat, Outlook, Word and Excel.
  • Excellent attendance, work ethic, attention to detail, and critical thinking skills.
  • Safety-first mindset with considerable knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Working knowledge of building codes and design standards.
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license from Missouri or from an adjacent state if you reside outside of Missouri.

  • This position is in an office environment and job duties may include prolonged periods of seated work at a desk, typing, written and verbal communication, problem solving, and the occasional ability to lift/carry up to 50 pounds. Examples of job duties may also include prolonged periods of walking/standing/sitting/bending/driving, climbing ladders, working in inclement weather and working on uneven or elevated surfaces. This list is not all inclusive, but a general representation of duties that may be encountered in this position, however other duties may be assigned contingent upon business needs. Please note, this position is considered a “Category 0” under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), meaning the incumbent will not normally receive overtime compensation except in unusual circumstances as determined by appointing authorities.
