The Missouri State Public Defender is an agency dedicated to providing legal representation to individuals who are unable to afford an attorney in criminal cases. We are committed to upholding the constitutional right to counsel and ensuring fair and just legal proceedings for all citizens.

As a Human Resources Assistant with the Missouri State Public Defender, you will support a mission‑driven organization dedicated to ensuring fair representation for poor individuals facing criminal charges. In this role, you’ll help keep essential HR operations running smoothly while working with a collaborative, supportive team.   • Process job applications and assist with applicant tracking
  • Respond to and appropriately direct incoming inquiries, including applicant questions and other general requests, ensuring timely and helpful follow-up
  • Assist with law school program tracking by recording intern and law clerk placements, maintaining documentation, and updating spreadsheets.
  • Support onboarding and new‑hire processes by preparing and processing required paperwork
  • Serve as backup for reception, including answering general inquiry and main‑line calls
  • Issue employee photo identification cards
  • Assist with payroll processing as directed
  • Respond to employee benefit questions and escalate complex issues appropriately
  • Provide administrative support to human resources and operations staff, including data entry, document preparation, and filing
  • Assist with other HR functions and special projects as needed
  • Graduation from high school or possession of high school equivalency
  • Three years of office or clerical experience; higher education may substitute for required work experience
  • Previous human resources experience is a plus but not required
  • Strong organizational skills and close attention to detail
  • Proven ability to multi-task with effective time management and prioritization skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Proficiency with common computer software programs (such as word processing, spreadsheets, and email applications)
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information professionally
  • A customer‑service mindset, with the ability to interact effectively with applicants, employees, and the public
