Job Summary

This position performs professional-level accounting work to support PERA’s complex pension-related financial operations by processing and reconciling high-volume pension-related financial transactions and ensuring compliance with state policies and internal controls. Key responsibilities include processing and reconciling member payments and daily cash receipts, recovering overpaid benefits, and adjusting member accounts for returned or rejected payments to maintain accurate balances. The position also responds to operational inquiries while supporting Finance team coordination and shared mailbox management. Additional duties may be assigned to support Finance operations and collaboration with internal teams and external partners.

Serving as a key member of the Finance Division, this position applies strong analytical skills and sound judgment to identify discrepancies, resolve issues, and safeguard pension assets. The role provides cross-functional backup support in payroll and employee reimbursement processing and other critical finance functions to ensure continuity of operations. The position works independently within established policies and procedures and is well suited for someone who values detailed financial work, accountability, and meaningful public service.

Once, new hire training is complete, this position is telework eligible and offers a hybrid work schedule which may include telework up to 50% of the scheduled workdays each month, based on agency and department needs and other dependencies. Scheduled in-office workdays are at PERA’s office building in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

One year of experience performing accounting duties in a financial institution, or debt collection organizations to recover overpayments.

OR

Three years of experience performing financial support duties in a financial institution or debt collection organization.

  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field may substitute for one (1) year of experience.

Experience must clearly demonstrate the following:

  • Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and internal control practices.
  • Experience working with accounting, financial, or CRM systems and the ability to analyze, reconcile, and interpret financial data.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills to research and resolve complex financial issues.
  • Communication skills to interact effectively with internal staff, members, employers, state agencies, and financial institutions.
  • Experience in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel, including functions such as VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, SUMIFS, pivot tables and sort and filter functions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Experience processing and reconciling cash receipts, or member payments.
  • Experience recovering overpayments or working with revenue recapture processes or other legal debt recovery.
  • Experience with the State of Minnesota’s accounting system (SWIFT) and/or payroll system (SEMA4).

Physical Requirements

Requires occasional lifting and carrying of articles such as file folders, ledgers, and small office equipment. Although a sedentary job is defined as one that involves sitting, a certain amount of movement is often necessary in carrying out job duties.
