Job Summary
This position exists to create and maintain a safe and secure environment, monitor safety and security concerns, and acts as a primary point of contact for emergency personnel at Minneapolis Community and Technical College buildings and its surrounding property.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Supervise a shift that consists of Student Safety Monitors.
- Perform scheduled unlock/lock-up of all campus buildings. Schedule may change due to special events or academic breaks. Activate/deactivate intrusion alarms as necessary.
- Handling and responding to any disturbances and violations of the laws of the state or rules and regulations of the college.
- Regulate, monitor and patrol all campus parking areas: parking ramp, auxiliary lot, Fine Arts and Kopp Hall loading dock, Technical Building loading dock ramp and area, Wells Center driveways.
- Ensure all campus-wide emergencies are documented and distribute all related information to appropriate designee.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- At least two (2) years of experience as a Security Patrol Officer, Crime Prevention Officer, or Peace Officer.
- Associate's degree in Law Enforcement, Paralegal or related field may substitute for 1 year of experience; Bachelor’s degree in above areas may substitute for 2 years of experience
- Ability to react quickly and appropriately in emergency situations.
- Ability to Interpret laws, regulations and policies.
- Knowledge of loss-prevention techniques.
Preferred Qualifications
- Good written communication with the ability to provide detailed, clear information;
- Good oral communication skills for interviewing witnesses, victims, suspects, and defusing conflicts and violent situations;
- Possess knowledge of standard police practices including investigation techniques and procedures, citizen’s arrest power and loss prevention techniques;
- Experience as a Campus Security Officer or similar position with a College or University
- Ability to work as a team member as well as individually
- Knowledge of access control, video surveillance, report writing software, intrusion alarms, detection and fire alarms;
- Experience providing customer service, assisting the public and de-escalating difficult situations.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to move throughout campus for prolonged periods to patrol buildings and grounds, respond to incidents, and support a safe campus environment.
- Must be able to transport and position heavy equipment or materials related to security and emergency response functions.
- Must be able to ascend and descend stairs and traverse campus facilities and grounds as part of routine patrol and emergency response duties.
- Must be able to maintain a stationary position for extended periods, when necessary, while observing, monitoring, or securing assigned areas.
Other Requirements
- Must be able to pass FBI/BCA background check free from convictions and/or misdemeanor violations.
- Former and/or current employees must be in good standing with Minneapolis College.
