Introduction

The Maryland Office of the State Prosecutor is seeking an applicant to serve as a Legal Support Officer/Senior Paralegal, cross-designated to work full-time in the Office of the United States Attorney (USAO) for the District of Maryland, operating out of both the USAO Baltimore and Greenbelt Offices. The current recruitment is for a Legal Support Officer at the Greenbelt Office location. The Legal Support Officer will work closely with Assistant United States Attorneys and local, state and federal law enforcement agencies and task forces, supporting their efforts to identify, investigate and prosecute individuals and organizations responsible for committing acts of violence and crimes involving guns, gangs, and narcotics throughout the State of Maryland. The position is contractual and funded through the Governor’s Office of Crime Prevention and Policy. This is a Special Appointment position that serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority. POSITION DUTIES

This position will provide paralegal and administrative support to the USAO for criminal investigations and litigation in the Greenbelt office. Responsibilities include the organization and preparation or documents for electronics discovery, assistance in all aspects of litigation including trial presentation, legal research, and general administrative support.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:���Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate. Experience: Three years of administrative staff or professional work.� Notes:� 1. Candidates may substitute 30 college credit hours from an accredited college or university for each year up to two�years of the required experience.� � 2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree�from a college or university�for the required experience. � 3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work that included the regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting complex administrative plans, policies, rules or regulations or analysis of operational programs or procedures with recommendations for improvement on a year-for-year basis for the required�experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to candidates with a background in criminal investigations and prosecutions. Strong abilities to build and maintain relationships with victims, witnesses, and law enforcement are essential, along with excellent legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills. The ideal candidate will possess a knowledge of standard legal citation system sufficient to perform straightforward legal research; excellent written and oral communications skills and analytic ability; and familiarity with a variety of computer applications, specifically the Microsoft suite (word, Excel, etc) and Adobe Acrobat. The Candidate should be detail oriented, able to work in a fast-paced environment, and have strong organizational skills. Substantial experience with e-discovery systems is preferred.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Due to the confidential nature of the work, selected candidates must undergo and pass a criminal background check.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits. Leave may be granted to a contractual employee at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
