Position Summary & Responsibilities
Position Summary:
All employees are expected to work in a harmonious and cooperative fashion with other staff to provide efficient and effective customer service: to use free time as available to assist other staff in the completion of work assignments and perform other tasks as needed; to contribute to a positive work environment through a positive, helpful, courteous demeanor towards staff, customers and the general public; and to adhere to appropriate standards of conduct regarding the use of leave, reports to work on time and in the designated fashion.
The IT Network Engineer provides operational support for enterprise IT and operational technology (OT) networks within a secure healthcare environment. This role supports both traditional enterprise networking and network-connected operational systems such as video surveillance, access control, building management systems, facility awareness systems, duress, lighting controls, and other building or life-safety platforms.
Initially the position will focus on assisting efforts in the establishment of a new facility and IT department. Once the facility is fully established the position will transition to day-to-day network support, monitoring, troubleshooting, documentation, and coordination with senior network engineers, IT security, facilities, and external vendors. The IT Network Engineer helps the network owner ensure systems remain available, secure, and compliant with Kansas State IT security policies, regulatory requirements, and third-party accreditation standards.
Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
- Serve in a front-line support capacity for the assigned facility.
- Maintain and support network connectivity for enterprise, building management, and physical security systems (video surveillance, access control, paging, duress).
- Install and maintain network systems including but not limited to switches, routers, hubs, bridges, required cabling, cable management components, and more.
- Monitor system health, network utilization, and performance; proactively identify risks or degradation.
- Assist with deployment, validation, and ongoing support of wireless networking systems to ensure appropriate staff coverage.
- Assist with the implementation, validation, and documentation of building-wide enterprise networking and OT systems for a new facility.
- Assist with coordination between integrators, contractors, and vendors during system commissioning and initial operational turnover (under IT Manager direction).
- Collaborate with and work under the direction of enterprise network engineering, security, compliance, and desktop support teams.
- Maintain accurate network and system documentation to support audits, cybersecurity reviews, and accreditation activities.
- Provide remote support assistance to other state-operated facilities and their local IT departments as needed.
- Performs other IT related duties as assigned by IT Manager or Appointing Authority.
- Required to lift 20-50 pounds and able to stand, sit, walk, bend, stoop and twist for long periods of time throughout shift.
- Be available to travel for training, coverage, or as designated by IT Manager when necessary.
Completes special projects and performs other duties as assigned including but not limited to ensuring the agency is adequately staffed during and immediately following natural and/or manmade disasters, infectious disease outbreaks, and/or acts of terrorism. Assists other employees in the work unit in accomplishing assignments as necessary.
Qualifications:
Special Qualifications/Education
- Four years of experience in computer science, Computer Networking, Management Information Systems, or other IT focused degrees. Industry recognized certifications pertinent to an IT Network Engineer I such as CompTIA Net , CCNA, CNWA, CCNP.
- Requires lifting 20-50 pounds and able to stand, sit, walk, bend, stoop and twist for long periods of time throughout shift.
- Unrestricted driver's license. Candidate must be available to travel for training, coverage, or as designated by IT Manager when necessary.
Minimum Requirement:
- Two to four years of experience in a role such as IT Network Engineer I, IT Specialist, or Network Analyst.
- Relevant certifications, or training may be substituted for a portion of the required experience based on other qualifying factors.
- Working knowledge of enterprise wired and wireless networking environments.
- Strong understanding of Ethernet networking, TCP/IP, VLAN-based network segmentation, and basic firewall concepts.
- Experience supporting network-connected security, building, or OT systems (e.g., cameras, access control, intercom, BAS, paging).
- Familiarity with network documentation, diagrams, ticketing systems, and change or configuration management processes.
- Ability to work effectively in time-sensitive, mission-critical, and people-focused environments.
Preferred:
- One year or more of experience supporting or maintaining operational technology (OT) or building systems.
- Experience working in structured or regulated environments such as healthcare, behavioral health, financial, or correctional settings.
- Industry-recognized certifications such as CompTIA Network , Cisco CCNA, or CWNA.
- Strong customer service skills and the ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
