Job Description
The Systems Planning Bureau at the Iowa Department of Transportation is seeking a Program Planner 1 to join our team! In this role, you’ll play a vital part in maintaining and producing standard and specialized mapping and visualization products that help communicate transportation information to our customers. Guided by our mission— Making Lives Better Through Transportation —you’ll be expected to demonstrate the Iowa DOT’s five CORE values in your work: Safety First, People Matter, Customer Focused, Servant Leadership, and Integrity Without Exception to ensure that the work you do makes a meaningful impact.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree;
OR
A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience, where one year of full-time experience in the administration or operation/execution (i.e., providing consultation and/or technical assistance to stakeholders, research and analysis, or enforcement of program guidelines/policies/procedures) of a program (i.e., the provision of a service or an administrative oversight/enforcement responsibility) equals thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in any field.
OR
employees with current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes the experience equal to eighteen months of full-time work as a Planning Aide.

As a Program Planner, you’ll be responsible for duties such as:
- Maintaining and producing mapping products using Esri ArcGIS and other GIS tools.
- Analyzing city annexation information to ensure laws, policies, and procedures are followed, and entering this information into appropriate databases.
- Developing and updating standard base maps annually and fulfilling special map requests in both static and online interactive form.
- Ensuring all map products meet customer specifications and are edited for completeness and accuracy.
- Applying new technologies and automated methods for data display and mapping.
- Researching and testing new software and procedures to improve efficiency and product quality.
Experience with programs such as Esri, Adobe, Word, Excel, Acrobat, and other basic text editor and interactive mapping applications will be critical in this role.
